HENDRICKS COUNTY RETIRED TEACHERS ASSOCIATION MINUTESSeptember 10, 2018Approximately 65 members, associates and visitors gathered at the Hendricks Country 4-H Conference Center in Danville, for fellowship, lunch, a program and a business meeting. During the pre-lunch social period, Linda Buckner and Margie Appleget, who also came early for the setup of the tables, used the time for registration and meal payments. Ellen McKenzie opened the gathering by welcoming all members and guests. Ellen then led all in attendance in the Pledge of Allegiance and after an Invocation was offered by Jeff Thompson, she dismissed the tables by number to the buffet table. Once again, the lunch buffet was catered by Mayberry Café. PROGRAMDr. Jennifer McCormick, Indiana State Superintendent of Education, spoke on the concerns, achievements, and challenges of public education today. After the conclusion of her speech, she answered a number of questions from the audience. BUSINESS MEETING The meeting was called to order at approximately 1:00 p.m. Minutes for the May meeting were available on the tables and since no corrections or additions were made, they were approved as written. Linda Szewc gave the Treasurer’s report and provided a paper copy on the tables for members to MITTEE REPORTS:Legislative Report— Charlotte Martin, Howard Sims, and Jeff Thompson updated the membership on the progress of the bills through the legislature, stressed the importance of voting this fall, and explained about “public questions” appearing on the ballot. Member Concerns and Services and Necrology—Linda Szewc and Ellen reported on several recent deaths of educators in the area: Janet Thompson, Joan Ulrick and Charles Munston. Jane Teitz reported that cards were sent to a number of members: Vicki Loughmiller, Alice McCouglin, Robert Thompson, Linda Brooks, Evelyn Majors, and Sherri Gummer. Technology/Website: Nancy Singer reminded members that a copy of the PowerPoint which runs during the meeting was also available as a printout on the tables.Publicity: Judy Reed reminded new members to have their pictures taken for the membership listing.UNFINISHED BUSINESS:Ellen announced that the food donations would be taken to the Food Pantry at the Methodist Church in Danville. She also reported that our Silent Auction Basket contributions (Representative Assembly) earned $150 for IRTA Scholarships. NEW BUSINESS AND ANNOUNCEMENTSOctober 9th Hendricks County Retired Teachers will be hosting the Training Workshop for Areas 4 and 5. The meeting will be held in our usual meeting room and Mayberry Café will provide the catering.Members were reminded of the Dragstrip Dash which is on October 27th and were encouraged to sign up to run with other members.September 30th is the final day for current teachers to apply for an Active Teacher Grant.With no further business to be discussed, the meeting was adjourned with reminders that at the November 12th meeting the speaker will be Doug Boles, Indianapolis Motor Speedway President, and time will also be taken to recognize all veterans present. All members are urged to bring canned goods for donation to the local food pantries to each meeting. Door prizes were awarded to five lucky members.
