Potted Plant IdentificationPosted February 2nd 2014I received a potted plant from some friends recently and am completely flummoxed as to what the plants are. I spent about 1/2 hour going through every indoor plant in my University of Guelph Plant Identification course material - but nothing in there seems to match what is in this pot (and there were 30 plants in the work file with images and description!) One of them seems to be English Ivy - but the other two plants - which I know I have seen before - I have not been able to identify. Can you help me? David O You’ve got a mixture of plants in that pot. One is Ivy. Another is a type of Tree Fern (long, wavy strappy leaves). It could be a Java Fern but if you Google 'Tree Ferns tropical, photos,’ you can scroll through a whole bunch and you might find the exact variety by name. The last plant looks to me like a Bonsai- sized evergreen. If so, it is a variety of Dwarf Hinoki Cypress called Chamaecyparis nana aurea. It’s hard to tell for sure from your photo but if you don’t think it’s an evergreen, there are some ferns with fine foliage like this too. So Google the ferns and the cypress and I think you’ll find the answers.DonnaThe fern looks like Phlebodeum aureum, (though there are a couple Microsorum that look like that too. I would need to see the sori). The other plant is a Selaginella, but I do not know which species of Spikemoss. Perhaps its Selaginella kraussiana or S. plana or a hybrid. I think they call that one 'Frosty' spikemoss. You also have Spanish moss in that pot Tillandsia usneoides (a bromeliad) which appears to be alive, though often they use the dead stuff as decoration. Its cool though.Spikemosses rare hard to keep going. They really need to be evenly moist. Humidity is important. The Phlebodeum is tough as nails, but really doesn't like to be constantly moist. The ivy is also pretty tough and versatile. Mist the moss often and see how long you can keep it.Cathy ................
