Allergy and Special Diet Questions. We are in the process of updating our procedures in regards to allergy prevention. It is our goal to have clear expectations for everyone involved, including parents, students, teachers, nurses, and Nutrition Services staff. These questions were asked during the anaphylaxis training on November 16th. What should I do when the register flags an allergy but the student says “No, I’m not allergic anymore”? What is the staff’s responsibility? We are not allowed to serve a student something that we believe they are allergic to, so you should not serve the student that food item. Kindly tell the student that we need their parent to notify the nurse that the student is no longer allergic. This can be a phone call or email. Once the nurse notifies the Nutrition Coordinator and the Nutrition Coordinator removes the flag from the system, you may then proceed to serve that food item to the student. Nutrition Services is working with Student Health and Wellness to clarify expectations from parents, nurses, and Nutrition Services staff to better streamline this process. Can we have more meetings with nurses to identify care plans for students?Yes. You should be meeting with nurses whenever there is a new allergy in your school and maintaining a relationship with the nurse in your school to discuss plans and make sure you have the latest allergy information on all students. Can staff have access to the 504/IEP for allergy students? Nutrition Services Supervisors should build and maintain relationships with the school nurse to get all pertinent information regarding 504/IEP in your school. The posted menu doesn’t match Nutrislice so it’s hard for parents/students to identify allergens. If you notice that what you are serving doesn’t match what is on the menu in Nutrislice, please send in a feedback or contact Cole (36328 or cole.welhaven@) . Whose job is it to contact parents to ensure allergy plans are up to date? Parents are responsible for contacting the school to let the school know what foods their child is allergic to. Nurses enter that information into Infinite Campus, at which point it is sent to the Nutrition Coordinator who updates PCS. If a student contradicts PCS, the parent must let the school know that it is okay for them to have that food. Either the nurse or parent can initiate that conversation. Where does the allergy report come from? The allergy report is found in RIGHTTrak. Instructions for finding and printing the allergy report are found in the Nutrition Services Technology Manual under Reports. A new allergy reports must be printed whenever you have been made aware that there is a new allergy case in your school. They do not need to be printed daily but they should be kept as current as possible. Can we make sure there is a phone or walkie talkie in each cafeteria in case of allergic reaction emergency? All kitchens have a telephone in case of an emergency. Can we have labels for condiments after the POS?We will be discussing this with the Student Health and Wellness department to identify the best course of action. ................
