Specific Purpose: To inform how salt affects your life.

Central Idea (Main Goal): To inform people about salty foods and to help them eat less salt.

A. Introduction

Attention Grabber: Today I’m going to talk about how eating many salt affects your health.

Orienting Material: First of all, what is salt? Salt is a white crystalline substance that gives seawater its characteristic taste and is used for seasoning or preserving food. Salt is important to maintain fluid balance in your cells, contracting muscles, and helps digest to absorb needed nutrients. In addition, it plays an essential role on sending messages to our nervous system and balances the amount of water in our body. Salt is very important to us but when you eat too much, it becomes dangerous to your health.

First Major Point

A. The recommended amount of salt per day for an average person is about 2,500 milligrams.

1. If you have a heart disease or have high blood pressure, your recommendation is about 1,500 milligrams.

2. However, 9 out of 10 people consume too much sodium, way over their amount, an average of 3,500 milligrams or more.

B. Eating too much salt can give you many consequences to your health, such as hypertension, water retention, dehydration, and stroke.

1. Hypertension (high blood pressure)

- Hypertension is one of the biggest problems by eating too much sodium. Many adults have high blood pressure but don’t know because it doesn’t have any symptoms. More often known as high blood pressure, hypertension can kill you by sudden heart attacks.

2. Water Retention

- Water retention is when a high salt intake causes people to drink water up to 1.5 liters, which makes swelling in many parts of their body.

3. Dehydration

- Dehydration occurs when you need water, but you don’t drink enough that your body pulls the water from your cells.

4. Stroke

- Stroke is when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off, blocking the flow of oxygen to the brain that causes cells to die.

A. Surprising Facts about high sodium intake:

1. 77.9 million American ADULTS have high blood pressure.

2. KIDS who have a high-sodium diet are twice as likely to develop high blood pressure as kids who have low-sodium diets.

3. HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE is the leading risk factor for death in WOMEN in the United States, contributing to nearly 200,000 female deaths each year.

4. One slice of pizza can go up to 875 milligrams of salt and one can of soda has 75 milligrams of salt.

5. One fried chicken fingers makes 20% of your sodium amount per day.

A. How to reduce the amount of sodium

1. Try to always eat foods with the lowest salt level.

2. Don’t add salt when cooking.

3. Table sauces like ketchup, mustard and pickles can contain a lot of salt.

4. Bread and breakfast cereals can contain a lot of salt. Check the labels to compare brands.

5. Smoked meats and fish contain a lot of salt. Avoid these if you can.

6. Always ask for less sodium.

7. Look out for low-salt recipes. There are a number of low-salt cookbooks available, or you can search on the Internet.
