The Joyful NoiseRock Rapids United Methodist Church302 South Carroll Street~ Rock Rapids, Iowa 51246Pastor Kathy Sides~ kathysides@H: 712-472-2770 ~ C: 515-201-3634Administrative Assistant, Amber Kooikerrockrapidsumc@712-472-2324Volume 43, Issue 5 May, 2020A Letter from the Pastor…We continue to make our way through a strange and challenging time. The other day one of the young families of the church happened to cross my mind and I found myself thinking “Oh goodness, I haven’t seen them in worship for a while; I hope everything is okay with them!” And then it dawned on me that there are LOTS of people I haven’t seen in worship for a while – like almost everyone! It’s hard to believe that last Sunday was our 7th Sunday of doing worship with 10 or less because of COVID-19 restrictions. While I am very thankful for the dedication of everyone who is committed to being a part of worship during these weeks (whether it has been on the tech end, or reading, or playing the piano and organ, or singing) I have to admit that seeing ONLY them week after week is getting pretty old. I’d love to see you all back in your regular places. And yet, I am convinced that it is the right thing not to jump into opening worship up to everyone at this time. As difficult as it is to continue to be distant from one another, I am sure that it is the best way to keep as many as possible healthy. As important as I think worshipping together as the body of Christ is, we are also called by Christ to love and care for one another. Before now I don’t know that any of us would have imagined that loving and caring for one another would mean staying away from one another as much as possible, but that is our current reality! What is perhaps most difficult is not knowing for sure how long this will need to go on. While some things are beginning to open up, it doesn’t appear that COVID-19 cases in Iowa have peaked, so one’s danger of contracting the disease has not disappeared, and social distancing measures need to remain in place. It’s discouraging to every several days hear of some other event we had looked forward to being officially cancelled. And while by this time each new cancellation isn’t especially surprising, it still feels sad to hear each one. Most recently it was Rock Rapids’ Heritage Days. Just another one in a long list, but still a loss for so many. In the midst of all the disruption to our lives and all the uncertainty about the future, we have to remember that God is still with us. Even when life is drastically different than we have come to expect, God is still with us. Even with so many changes and losses, God is still with us. A couple of weeks ago the sermon talked about the Psalms, and how many times they expressed the awfulness of what the Israelites were facing: fears, famine, hatred, hunger and hopelessness, just to name a few. But in the midst of pouring out their hearts to God, crying out for God to hear them, to deliver them, they would turn around and express the hope that sustained them: that God was still there, that God heard their prayers, that God would hear and help them, strengthen them and sustain them; that God was still God. We find that hope expressed in the words of Psalm 46:1-3God is our refuge and strength,???a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change,???though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam,???though the mountains tremble with its tumult.Like the Israelites long ago, we can know the same thing, that no matter how our world has changed around us in the past couple of months, God is still our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. One of the most important things we can do during trying times is to remember God’s faithfulness and presence with us. Another important thing we can do is to remember the gifts God has given us to get us through those times. I think one of those gifts is the gift of laughter. Sometimes the best thing we can do when we feel like crying is to find a reason to laugh. It might not fix things, but it sure makes things more bearable. Some of the most gracious, courageous people I have known were the ones that were able to maintain their sense of humor when things were at their worst. So, below is some random “Church Humor” I found online. Most involve children and their earnest efforts to figure out things like faith and life. I hope they make you chuckle. May all of you be blessed during these days with peace, patience, love and laughter. Pastor Kathy17145011938000The Pastor came to visit the other day. She said that at my advanced age I should be thinking of the hereafter. I told her, "Oh, I do it all the time."?"No matter where I am - in the living room, upstairs, in the kitchen, or down in the basement, I am always asking myself: 'Now, what am I here after?'"Visiting his grandparents, a small boy opened the big family Bible. He was fascinated as he fingered through the old pages. Suddenly, something fell out. He picked it up and found that it was an old leaf that had been pressed flat between the pages. "Mama, look what I found," he called out. "What have you got there, dear?" his mother asked." With astonishment in his voice, the boy answered, "I think it's Adam's underwear!"At Sunday School they were learning how God created everything, including human beings. Johnny was especially intent when the teacher told him how Eve was created out of one of Adam's ribs. Later in the week his mother noticed him lying down as though he were ill, and said, "Johnny, what is the matter?" Johnny responded, "I have pain in my side. I think I'm going to have a wife."It was Palm Sunday but because of a sore throat, 5-year-old Johnny stayed home from church with a sitter. When the family returned home, they were carrying several palm fronds. Johnny asked them what they were for. “People held them over Jesus’ head as he walked by,” his father told him. “Wouldn’t you know it, “Johnny fumed, “the one Sunday I don’t go and he shows up.”The Sunday School teacher was describing that when Lot's wife looked back at Sodom she turned into a pillar of salt, when Bobby interrupted. "My mommy looked back once while she was driving," he announced, "and she turned into a telephone pole."Another Sunday School teacher said to her children, "We have been learning about how powerful the kings and queens were in Biblical times. But there is a higher power. Who can tell me what it is?" Tommy blurted out, "I know, Aces."After explaining the commandment to honor your father and mother, a Sunday School teacher asked her class if there was a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters. One boy, the oldest in his family, immediately answered, "Thou shalt not kill."Lot again... A father was reading Bible stories to his young son. He read, "The man named Lot was warned to take his wife and flee out of the city, but his wife looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt." His son asked, "What happened to the flea?" A teacher was testing the children in her Sunday school class to see if they understood the concept of getting to heaven because they believed in Jesus. She asked them, "If I sold my house and my car, had a big garage sale and gave all my money to the church, would that get me into Heaven?" "NO!" the children answered. "If I cleaned the church every day, mowed the yard, and kept everything neat and tidy, would that get me into Heaven?" Again, the answer was, "NO!" Now she was smiling. Hey, they're getting it, she thought! "Well, then, if I was kind to animals and gave candy to all the children, and loved my husband, would that get me into Heaven?" she asked. Again, they all answered, "NO!" She was just bursting with pride for them. "Well," she continued, "then how can I get into Heaven?" A five-year-old boy shouted out, "YOU GOTTA BE DEAD."Several children found a dead robin. Feeling that a proper burial should be performed, they secured a small box and some cotton batting, dug a hole in the back yard, and made ready to dispose of the deceased. The minister's 5-year-old son was chosen to say the prayer. And so with great dignity, he intoned, "Glory be to the Father...and unto the Son...and into the hole he goes."The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large tray of apples. A nun lettered a note and posted it on the apple tray: “Take only ONE. God is watching.” Moving along the lunch line, at the other end was a large tray of chocolate chip cookies. A girl wrote a note, which she put next to the tray of cookies, “Take all you want. God is watching the apples.”A pastor’s wife was preparing pancakes for her young sons. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their Mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. If Jesus were sitting here, He would say, “Let my brother have the first pancake. I can wait.” The oldest boy turned to his younger brother and said, “You be Jesus.”**************************************************************************************************-5715019367500If you would like to be included in the Weekly Prayer Partner EMAIL which includes scripture readings, prayer requests, birthdays, and weekly reminders, please email or call the church; especially if you have not received these lately. It helps us to know how much this community cares. Stay healthy, social distance & wear a mask.~Staff of Sanford Rock Rapids ClinicIt was such a fun treat to open my door and find an old-fashioned May Basket. The treats inside were just right. The popcorn brought back memories of years ago when we delivered May Baskets filled with popcorn, violets etc. It seems it was always a windy day which caused popcorn to spill in the car and we had clean-up time afterward. What wonderful memories. Thank you all so much for remembering me with homemade Scotcheroos, M&M’s, a thoughtful bible verse and the very special lines of a written verse. I am so blessed to be a member of the RRUMC congregation where love abounds and everyone is so thoughtful and caring. I am thankful. I look forward to the day when we will be back in the pews again and I will be humming “Surely the Presence of the Lord is in this Place.” He is there for sure. God bless us all. ~Holly Spitler12705524500UMC Members, Thank you! Thank you so much for the surprise May Day gift on my door knob. I will enjoy every bit of it. New dates for confirmation and camp Sunday will be set as these will be postponed due to the cancelation of church services. Third Avenue Youth Update/Heather: Youth group has been discontinued due to the pandemic. They are hoping to have a year end celebration once it has passed. The Urban Plunge has been postponed. They are currently looking at possible dates this summer. THIRD AVENUE SQUARED UPDATE/Sheila & Kathy: Canceled until further notice due to pandemic. EVANGELISM & MISSIONS/Rhonda: The meal ministry will continue as planned for Bread of Life next week. This food is needed now more than ever. We will prepare food on Tuesday evening and the people will pick up the bags of food on east side of community building on Wednesday. Praises for a full freezer of donated food at the church at this time! Evangelism met and discussed Jessa/Jude fund on Monday, March 16 and a new sub-committee has been formed by Sonya, Shawn and Elaine. “Heavenly Joys” was started as a memorial fund in honor of their heavenly babies - Jessa, Jude and Carsin (granddaughters of Mark & Sonya Peterson, Larry & Shawn Wibben and Jerry & Elaine Birkey). They were shown so much love during their time of grief, they decided to pay it forward by sharing God’s love to church family and the community. Mission: We want to acknowledge and wrap our arms around our church families who have sorrows and joys including the birth of a child, hospitalization with an illness or surgery, death, moving, chemotherapy or a hardship by providing meals, gas cards, or food cards to families in our church and community. We will work in conjunction with the Meal Committee who delivers meals to those in need. What you can do to help: if you or someone in your family is in need, please reach out to Elaine, Shawn or Sonya. Amy Menage is also interested in being a part of this group. Pastor Kathy mentioned there is a care-giving training in Des Moines Sept 11 & 12 on conference website that might be worth looking into. The subcommittee is asking permission from the Ad Board to have their own checkbook starting with the funds from the current Jessa & Jude fund. Shawn printed business sized cards containing the Mission that will be placed in greeting cards distributed. We will be bringing a meal to two church families this week. This will be introduced to the church soon. Ad Council gave approval to move forward with setting up a separate account for this purpose. Church members will be welcomed to donate to the fund. Motion to approve a separate account be opened up for Heavenly Joys: Kathy Van Berkum, motion was seconded by Sheila Maxwell. TREASURER/Marceia: We have $105 earmarked for Daxton. We have been waiting to hear from Hannah circle if there is any additional money to add to it, but those funds have been dispersed separately. Marceia will cut the check and get the money to Dax’s family now. The remaining balance of $14.69 in the existing furnace fund will be dumped back into the general fund and discontinued going forward. Email was sent this morning regarding the budget. Our bottom line is under budget by $8,626.14. Profit & Loss – balance sheet has all the special accounts listed, can look at that to determine balances. The status for 1Q 2020 is -$521.39, which does not include apportionments. All ACH payments have been made for the month. The concern of not passing the offering plate because of canceled services was discussed. We will send out emails to encourage ACH offering for automatic withdrawals as an option to help maintain our bottom line. Discussion held on how and when apportionments would be paid. Rhonda suggested we pay them now and have a campaign this fall to raise funds. Payment for this quarter will be $8854.92 and will be made out of the Sieperda fund. FINANCE SEC/Evelyn: Our investments with Iowa UMC Building Fund TrustGift That Keeps on Giving: $32,668, 2.35%, matures 11/20/2021, interest used for Missions. MEMORIAL/Judy: A Lantern was purchased which will be taken care of by the Misfits. We are looking to purchase some nicer chairs in the fellowship hall with memorial money in the near future. SPRC/Dave: The SPRC met with Ron Carlson. Ron is doing something a bit differently from previous pastor appointments for us since there was some interest in a pastor coming here through conference but nothing solid. Ron met with a young man in the community named Travis Remme, who is halfway done attending a non-denominational seminary in Sioux Falls who has expressed interested in our church. Due to him being a student halfway done with his studies, Travis can only be salaried at halftime with no benefits until he reaches ? completion of seminary or becomes ordained. Ron met with Travis who agreed to these stipulations and to become a member of our church. A little background on Travis – he also runs a business called Visiting Angels and is married to Jessica. They have 2 young boys and it should be noted they lost a little girl two years ago. Travis has been assigned to pastor our congregation as opposed to being appointed, starting July 1. Travis and Jessica wish to remain in their home so will not need the parsonage. SPRC will meet with Travis and Ron in the near future to work out details of training, including completion of 3 classes to be a Methodist minister. Travis will need to go to licensing school so he will be able to perform baptisms and communion services. Dave will ask Travis to supply a short bio to be sent out in an email letting the congregation know wheels are in motion for this assignment as our pastor. TRUSTEES/Lainn: Dave and Lainn did a walk through the parsonage last week and things looked good with normal wear and tear inside and out, a few minor things to fix. Lainn has several men helping paint the downstairs church Sunday school rooms which is coming along nicely. We are currently waiting for an electrician to repair a light switch in the sanctuary. It was noted that the east kitchen door needs to be repaired, as it does not lock quite right. Also the North front door is not lining up correctly and needs to be looked at. PASTOR KATHY: Directives from the state keep changing by the hour. The CDC first directed that any gathering over 10 people be cancelled for the next 8 weeks. Later, Lyon County Health department clarified the time frame is currently through March 31st. Therefore, worship and meetings will be canceled through March 31st and then either extend that timeframe or resume worship at that time. Pastor will keep everyone informed on any updates on this information. The baptism for Thaddeus Engleman has been postponed until we can have services. Earl will need to determine whether or not there will be a cantata as more data becomes available. We will also need to decide how we will proceed with fellowship time once worship resumes. Council of Churches has been informed that all Sunday worship services, and mid-week Bible study/devotion time will be discontinued until further notice. We will be planning Maunday Thursday and Good Friday services as able during the pandemic. Pastor Kathy stated that in light of school being dismissed for 4 weeks, Amber has requested to work from home some of the time. Her plan is to come in a few days a week and the rest of the time she will keep track of her hours from home. Heather Stubbe will continue with cleaning duties as needed throughout the pandemic. (Later update from SPRC chair after meeting is that Heather will plan to maintain regular hours by doing some cleaning projects that she does not have a chance to do on a regular basis). This request was approved. WORSHIP/Sheila: Sheila, Pastor Kathy and Sonya will be meeting to discuss what to do in the absence of worship services. The goal is to video tape sermons and some music for the congregation that can be uploaded as usual to the local cable channel and YouTube. COMMUNICATIONS/Sonya: We finally have the camera working! Hope to tape sermons and music the next couple of weeks. UMW/Vicki: World Day of Prayer was held Friday, March 6 with average attendance of 40. Salad luncheon planning is underway and hope to do this June 26. We will plan as usual and hopefully it will happen. NEW BUSINESS: None. NEXT MEETING: Was set for Wednesday, April 22 at 6 pm. Motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Rhonda Menning. Motion seconded by Kathy Van Berkum at 7:14 pm. Respectfully submitted, Elaine Birkey Ad Council Secretary ................
