Interactive Notebook Guidelines

This year you will maintain an interactive notebook for science. On these pages will be information about the notebook itself, what the notebook will be used for, and how it will be assessed.

The Notebook…

* Will be a marble notebook that is hard cover and be accompanied by a couple of regular pencils and a box of colored pencils at all times.

* Will have a title page at the start of each unit.

* Will have a table of contents in the beginning of the notebook.

* Will have every page numbered, dated and titled with the title of the lesson, lab or activity.

* Will have your change of thoughts after a lesson. These changes should be written under of next to original thought in RED pen. This includes correcting your work.

* Will have all right and left sides completed.

* Will have corrections to all assessments in RED pen.

* Will have a separate section in the back of the notebook for “Show what you know” assignments, study guides and assessments.

The purpose of this notebook is…

* To process what you have learned through the labs and activities we do in class using an input/output method. It will help you learn content, make personal connections, practice/improve your writing, and review for assessments.

* To practice the skills that real scientists practice by keeping a notebook, as real scientists do, and recording all that you experience.

* To have a reference for future science courses and for review for state tests.

* To practice and improve on the skills of literacy (reading, writing, and speaking) using experiences in science as a tool to do this.

* To have one organized location for all of your science materials.

The purpose of using red pens is….

* To correct your original thoughts on probes after you learn material

* To make corrections and improvements on weekly “what have I learned” assessments

* To make corrections and improvements on quizzes and tests

* To add your own notes, how subject matter relates to your life, what are your personal tricks to remember information, what questions do you still have…….

* To make additions and improvements to completed work prior to notebook check

The notebook will be assessed…

* Based on rubric that you will receive. Comments will be given on how you can improve your notebook.

The notebook will be organized….

The notebook will be organized using a Left Side/Output and Right Side/Input format. The chart below will give you some examples of what might go on each side, but if you have not used an interactive notebook before, Do Not Fear! I will go step by step as we get started on using this format. You will never need to guess what to put where. We will discuss and decide together where to put items in the notebook.

Loss of Notebook:

Should you lose your notebook, you will need to get a replacement. You will need to copy the right side pages, and then re-do your left side pages. Your left side pages should not be exact copies of somebody else’s work. That is plagiarizing. In other words, DO NOT LOSE YOUR NOTEBOOK!!!
