Not only are the anecdotes of the various historical figures’ deaths written in an easy to read format, but they also include fun, exaggerated black and white illustrations and additional related information that the reader will find interesting written in various, striking fonts. Once kids start reading, the gruesome stories will keep them entertained and unable to look away, like driving past a car accident.Rosa is a unique and original perspective of one of the most important events in the battle for civil rights. Most students have heard the story of Rosa Parks but this book includes an insight into Rosa’s home life and job and not only the physical reason she was too tired to give up her seat on the bus, but the emotional and psychological reasons she was tired of how African Americans were being treated. The cover of the book depicts Rosa sitting calmly with the bus driver appearing angry and irritated very close to her face. The illustrations, which appear to be torn paper and material, make the reader feel like they are indeed in the time period of the 50’s and 60’s, including the “Whites Only” signs in the background. One of the pictures is of Martin Luther King Jr.’s back with the perspective he must have seen while encouraging the African Americans to peacefully support the bus strikes. The illustrations and the dialogue work splendidly together to portray the grave importance of that moment in history.Primates is a good example of design. The bright green color of the book jacket is sure to attract attention. The book its self is an entertaining and informative look at the lives of Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Biruté Galdikas written in the format of a graphic novel. This three-person biography is complex, but to help the reader navigate through the story, the author uses different fonts to narrate each woman’s story.? Young adult readers will find the illustrations appealing, and they complement the women’s stories with bright, setting appropriate colors.StyleMe...JaneWe Are the ShipBalloons Over BroadwayIn his book, Me...Jane, Patrick McDonnell writes about the childhood of Dr. Jane Goodall showing her love of animals from a very young age. McDonnell is enthusiastic about this subject because he also has a deep concern for the environment and animal welfare. Even though it is a biography, the story is written like a fiction picture book with simplistic vocabulary and complementary illustrations. The illustrations have a cartoon like feel that express Goodall’s joy, wonder and satisfaction in a way that is sure to hold a child’s interest. Some of Goodall’s own sketches and drawings are included, an actual photograph of her with a chimpanzee, and a heartfelt message from Goodall herself. Young children will be able to relate to her, and learn that you are never too young to follow your dreams. Hopefully, this book will pique a child’s interest and they will want to learn more about Jane Goodall and/or animals.A very unique style was used to write the book We Are The Ship. The author narrates the history through the eyes of a former player. He tells of the struggles that African-Americans endured in order to play baseball.??He?also tells us about many of the unsung heroes of Negro League baseball.? The title of each chapter is an inning of baseball. At the beginning of each new inning is a quote from one of the legendary players of that time. The detailed paintings capture the pride, and the pain, that the Negro Leaguers experienced. His from-the-ground perspectives make the players look larger than life. ?The author’s passion for the subject is evident in the extensive research, and his tenacity to keep going through many challenges over an eight year period from the books beginning to completion. This book definitely will attract boys who love the sport. and immerse the reader in the compelling story being told.Style is an author’s unique way of presenting of information that should reveal the author’s passion for the subject. In Balloons Over Broadway, by Melissa Sweet is a Caldecott Honor Winner tells the story of Tony Sarg, the boy who became the puppeteer of Macy’s Thanksgiving day parade. The bright colors on the cover are sure to grab the attention of a young reader, and then Sweet holds that attention through her many different styles of illustrations, which include cartoons, pictures of actual books and materials that Sarg may have used, and a newspaper clipping advertising the parade. The font stays the same throughout the book, but is written in different places on each page, creating a comic-book like appearance. The reader is forced to look at all the visuals on a page while reading. Like Tony Sarg, Melissa Sweet loved to figure out how to make things move, demonstrating her passion for the subject matter. ................
