RESEARCH INTERESTS

Ecology, behaviour, and conservation of marine apex predators. I am interested in understanding the impact of changing climatic factors on the distribution and abundance of prey of marine mammals and its subsequent effect on their habitat use.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

• Ph.D. Thesis Title, Nesting ecology and population genetics of Snow Petrel (Pagodroma nivea) in East Antarctica

• Ravi Sankaran Fellow, Mingan Island Cetacean Study, Quebec, Canada (Aug-Oct 2012)

Conducted boat-based rorqual whale focal follows, population surveys, and photo-identification. Performed database matches for blue, fin, humpback, and minke whales, gave presentations on marine mammal biology and conservation to the public, operated and maintained research vessels. Also involved in biopsy darting, behaviour data collection of cetaceans, assisted in data entry for boat based sightings work, maintaining logbooks/ nautical charts and maintaining laboratory equipment.

• Research Biologist, Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun, India (Apr 2011- Mar 2012 )

Foot/vehicle surveys/transects for prey density estimation for potential Cheetah reintroduction at five sites. Additionally, socio-economic surveys of the villages near the sites to assess the attitudes of people towards carnivore reintroduction.

• Research Personnel, Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun, India (Dec 2009 –Apr 2011)

Conducted Distance sampling for ungulates, sign surveys for predators and camera-trapping using active infra-red digital cameras (mark-recapture framework) at 4 different tiger landscapes and Radio-telemetry of a male Tiger at Sundarbans.

• Student Member, 28th Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica (January – September 2009)

Conducted experiments to understand the effect of changing environmental variables on the physiology of the live Antarctic Krill in the austral summer of 2009 (Jan- Mar) at Prydz bay, East Antarctica and India Bay, Princess Astrid coast.

• Volunteer, Wildlife Institute of India, 28th Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica. (Jan – Mar 2009),

I assisted scientists in collecting data on ship-based transects and aerial transects along the Indian sector of Antarctica.

• Project Assistant, National Institute of Oceanography, Goa (Jul- Sep 2008)

Boat-based sampling of Zuari river estuary for macrobenthic fauna using a grab and laboratory analysis of the samples.

• Student Researcher, Department of Zoology, Institute of Science, Mumbai (Jun 2007- May 2008)

Assessment of the seasonal abundance, diversity, stress physiology and bioactive potential of marine fauna found in the intertidal zone of south Mumbai coast (west coast of India).

• Volunteer, UGC major research project “Biodiversity of Bhatye estuary” (2004-06), at Department of Zoology, RP Gogate College of Science, University of Mumbai, Ratnagiri.
