Subject: Maryland State Scholarship Information for 2019-2020

Maryland State offers four (4) scholarships annually to members in good standing. Each of these scholarships is worth a maximum of $1,500. Attached is an application for your chapter members to use in applying for the scholarships. Should you need additional applications, please feel free to copy the attached one or to contact Jean Marie Hofstetter, Scholarship Chairman, for additional applications.

One of the purposes of Delta Kappa Gamma is to Endow Scholarships. Our committee is trying to do just that, but we need your help to identify members in the local chapters who are working on advanced degrees, certification renewal or additional certifications.

The criteria for applying for a Maryland State Scholarship are:

1. The applicant must have been a member in good standing for three years prior to applying for a scholarship.

2. Active participation at chapter and state levels of the Society is considered.

3. Scholarships will be awarded in the names of:

a) Dr. Anne H. Matthews

b) Esther J. Crooks

c) Dr. Fern D. Schneider

d) The Founders

4. The Matthews, Crooks and Schneider Scholarships ($1500 each) may be used for:

a) Additional certification such as National Teacher Board Certification

b) Certificate renewal, which may include MSDE credit courses and workshops for CEU’s

c) Graduate level courses towards a Master’s Degree

d) Graduate level courses toward a Doctoral Degree

5. Scholarship recipients shall be asked to write a brief article for publication in the October issue of The Maryland State NEWS detailing their utilization of scholarship funds related to their program of study.

6. The Founders Scholarship (up to $1500) is designated for lifelong learning experiences unrelated to an advanced degree, certificate renewal or National Board Certification. There may be more than one awardee each year. The recipient of the Founders Scholarship shall:

a. Demonstrate evidence of intent to engage in an extended learning program involving a series of lectures, workshops and/or academic- based continuing education classes at an accredited institution or as part of a nationally recognized program for lifelong learning.

b. Distinguish herself from one seeking a Mini Grant whose intention is to engage in limited exposure for personal enrichment in a new skill, avocation or single topic of interest.

c. Share her experience in a Maryland State Leadership Development Conference, Program Workshop, Webinar, or the like.

Two letters of recommendation are required. One letter should be from the Chapter President and one from a professional supervisor such as a school principal, mentor or curriculum area supervisor. The postmark deadline for applying is January 15, 2020.

The applicant agrees to attach a brief article for the DKG MD Newsletter detailing the utilization of the scholarship funds.

The names of those applicants chosen to receive scholarship awards will be presented to the Maryland State Executive Board for approval at the March meeting. Recipients will be notified of the awards given. The presentation of the scholarships will take place in the spring, either at the State Convention or at the Leadership Development Conference.
