MLA STYLE

IN TEXT CITATIONS FORMAT

MLA style uses parenthesis for in text citations. Generally, the following format is used: (author's last name page #).

Example ? (Smith 82).

This comes at the end of the quote or sentence and before the period. Example ?

These are the reasons for the fall of the empire (Smith 82).

If you mention the author's name in your sentence then it does not need to be included in the citation. Example ?

As Smith argued, a lack of clear goals led to their downfall (83).

If the source has no author then a shortened version of the title is used. Example ?

Which is why the Romans did not last (Empire 125).

Internet sources (websites, database articles, etc.) will not have a page number. Just use the author's last name or a shortened version of the article's title. Example ?

These are the reasons for the fall of the empire (Smith). Or

These are the reasons for the fall of the empire ("Empire Falls").

Lastname, Firstname. Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication.

Example ?

If two authors ?

Periodicals (Magazine, Newspaper) ?

Author(s). "Title of Article." Title of Periodical Day Month Year: pages.

Example ?

Buchman, Dana. "A Special Education." Good Housekeeping Mar. 2006: 143-8.

Scholarly Journal ?

Author(s). "Title of Article." Title of Journal Volume.Issue (Year): pages.

Example ?

Name of Site. Date of Posting/Revision. Name of institution/organization affiliated with the site (sometimes found in copyright statements). Date you accessed the site [electronic address].

Author(s). "Title of Article." Title of Journal. Volume. Number (year): pages. Title of Database. Publisher. Name of Library, city, sate abbreviation. Date of Access

Your Work Cited page should be the last page of your paper. All of the sources you used should be found on your Works Cited page. Your sources should be listed in alphabetical order by the author's last name. If no author then by the title of the book/article/website.
