Graphs

Graphs show you information as a visual image or picture. We can call this information data. Graphs are drawings that show mathematical information with lines, shapes, and colors. Graphs are also known as charts. People use graphs to compare amounts of things or other numbers. Graphs are useful because they can be easier to understand than numbers and words alone. When a graph uses colors or shapes to represent information, the graph will have a graph key. Graph keys tell you what the symbols or colors on a graph mean. Graph titles tell you what the information on a graph is about.

Types of Graphs

There are many types of graphs. The most common types are Pie Graphs, Line Graphs, Bar Graphs, and Map Charts.

Line Graphs

A line graph is a graph that shows how data changes over time using a line. They have an x-axis (horizontal) and a y-axis (vertical). Usually, the x-axis has numbers for the time period, and the y-axis has numbers for what is being measured.

2. What information does the line graph above tell us?

Answer:

3. Around what time of day is the most water used in summer?

Answer:

4. Around what time of day is the least water used in summer?

Answer:

5. Around what time of day is the most water used in winter?

Answer:

6. Around what time of day is the least water used in winter?

Answer:

7. About how much water was used from 4:00 a.m. – 4:30 a.m. in summer?

Answer:

8. About how much water was used from 8:00 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. in winter?

Answer:

Bar Graphs

Bar graphs are graphs that use bars to compare the amounts of two or more things. Bar graphs can be used to show how something changes over time or to compare items. They have an x-axis (horizontal) and a y-axis (vertical). Typically, the x-axis has numbers for the time period or what is being measured, and the y-axis has numbers for the amount of stuff being measured.

3. How many gallons of water were used per day for domestic use in 2005?

Answer:

4. What water use consumed the most water per day in 2005? How much?

Answer:

5. How much water was used per day for industrial use in 2005?

Answer:

6. What water use consumed the least water per day in 2005? How much?

Answer:

Pie Graphs

Pie graphs can be used to show percentages of a whole, and represent percentages at a set point in time. They do not show changes over time. Pie graphs are circles with “slices” that compare the percentages of two or more things.

Map Charts

Map Charts are graphs that consist of a map that contains information about the geographic locations that are shown. For example, it might be a map of the United States that shows whether each state is likely to vote republican or democrat.
