Instructions to interviewer: These guidelines are recommended to help you select the best associates for your store. The following observations/questions are recommended in addition to questions about previous work experience and education. Complete this checklist making the observations and or asking the questions listed. Once complete you should have a good feel whether this applicant is a good fit for your team and a person that can interact with our customers and project the helpful image for which we’re known. Make notes at the bottom describing your impressions (negative and positive) and what action you recommend. Checklist should be returned to Human Resources.

Application review: Check for questions/concerns regarding (Some of these issues won’t be relevant for young people seeking their first job.)

❑ Gaps in employment history

❑ Length of time at each employer

❑ Reasons for leaving previous jobs

❑ Previous work experience: retail or technical (e.g., plumbing, electrical, garden, etc.), customer service

❑ Conviction of any felony

❑ Ability to perform essential job-related tasks with/without reasonable accommodation. Describe any accommodation that’s needed and consult with Human Resources.

❑ References provided

Personal Observations

To be consistent with the principles of the 6 E’s, take special note of the following:

❑ Well groomed (compliance with Ace standards)

❑ Shows enthusiasm in his/her walk, speech, and facial expressions

❑ Respectful (i.e. sir, ma’am, thank you, please)

❑ Positive body language

Probing Questions

❑ Do you have your own transportation to get to work?

❑ How will working affect your grades?

❑ What is your grade point average? (Low average may indicate inability to remain employed without serious academic problems)

❑ Are you over sixteen?

❑ What extracurricular activities do you participate in? (Some activities may conflict with work or require unreasonable scheduling.)

❑ What time do you get out of school? What time can you be at work?

❑ What days can you not work? (Saturday and/or Sunday are usually requirements.)

❑ Why do you want to work? (Should not be because a parent insists)

❑ Name someone who had a major influence on your life and describe that influence.
