The basic definition of research to collect information and can be used to make informed decisions or find out new facts, It’s basically used in everyday life without us realizing it from finding out a new brand of makeup to finding out more about switching to a new phone company and what they have to offer, research is used all the time. Here I will explain all the different types/kinds of research used in media industries;Market Research: is to collect and analysis of information about the market that the product competes with for audience and revenue. It’s very important for business strategy to see if there is anything out in the market like the product that you want to produce; it shows the market size, market need and competition. When doing market research there are different factors that are very important to know such as: Age, Gender, Culture and Income and Social Class. This will stop discrimination to the general public and anyone interested in the product. Different types of questions come into play when doing market research such as ‘What do consumers need?’ ‘Who are the potential consumers/target markets?’ Media Research: this involves looking at different issues that have appeared such as media content and audience. Surveys are also used to conduct the investigation of what the audience/consumers watch/read or listen to in newspapers, television and radio.Social Research: this can involve many types of research into one for example: from gathering information on the population (demographics) to the attitudes/ behavior of the general public.Quantitative Research: It involves the use of data or information in the form of numbers. It can measure the quantity of many things such as – how many people live in a village, how many people own products produced by Apple, how many people live below the boarder line of poverty in third world countries etc. Surveys are usually used when carrying out these types of research; they can be done face to face or Internet Surveys. Popular source for designing questions is Survey Monkey. Also ratings from popular TV Shows involves numbers and figures which links to quantitative research.Face to Face are used to carry out surveys with a mixture of target audiences that can arrange from the ages of 18-50+, In face to face interviews/surveys that usually use ‘Yes or No’ answers that cuts straight to the point of what the person doing the research wants. Internet Surveys/questionnaires can be seen everywhere, they usually pop up once you look to go into a website and will say ‘answer the following questions and you can be in the chance to win. .’ This catches the reader’s attention and more than likely will answer the survey to see what they can win. They can also be sent via email. In media, this research is the most used as it is the most basic and can tell us different types of things e.g. the ratings of a new film, sales of a C.D, ratings of a television show. The main reason why carrying out a quantitative survey can be to see why numbers/figures are at the numbers now and what exactly they do. Qualitative Research: This is used to find out more of the understanding and opinions of the consumer on the product; it can show the problems and helps the development for quantitative research. E.g. Film and game reviews, these are very important as the feedback of the product will allow the success or failure of the product and can cause mixed reviews to different target audiences. Individual interviews and focus groups are used for qualitative research. Quasi-Experimental: This involves the comparison of two groups, but one of the groups is influenced by the external source but the other one isn’t. E.g.: This research method is useful because it finds out the average impact on many different studies with hypothesis. E.g. We have also done this for our Weebly websites and have commented on each others giving our opinions and what could be changed, I have screenshots of a few examples below to visually showcase. Barb – What does BARB stand for? – Broadcasters’ Audience Research Board. And what exactly does it do? – ‘To provide industries with standard television audience measurement services for broadcasters and the advertising industry.’ Barb is owned by very well known television companies such as – BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. The link listed underneath shows exactly how BARB works. - This link takes you to 3 videos that explain how BARB’s service works.BBFC – British Broadcast of Film Classification, ‘It provides a review of activities, classification and decisions of the Board over the calendar year.’ It’s an independent, non-governmental body that has classified videos/films/DVD since the year of 1984. In every DVD or Film that is produced you will see the BBFC review of the age that is approved e.g film could be rated 18,12,PG,G Class: Nd.YR.1 National Diploma Creative Media Production 2014-2015 Aisling SweeneyTutor: Faustina Starrett Level 3Assignment 3: Research ReportScreen Shot of BBFC Website – Visual ExampleScreen Shot of BARB Website – Visual Example Class: Nd.YR.1 National Diploma Creative Media Production 2014-2015 Aisling SweeneyTutor: Faustina Starrett Level 3Assignment 3: Research ReportExample of Primary Source/Data: On our blog websites for college, we had to make a comment underneath different people’s pages about their website; here is an example of someone’s page I have commented on and also got feedback from my tutor, Fautina Starrett..My Interview questions for Joanne Sweeney-Burke: Class: Nd.YR.1 National Diploma Creative Media Production 2014-2015 Aisling SweeneyTutor: Faustina Starrett Level 3Assignment 3: Research ReportPurpose of Research: Demographics: these are very important while carrying out research because it is the statistical data of a population e.g. average age, gender, income, education etc..This example is good because it interlinks with media and shows the percentage of the population uses these online social media sites the most. Research: The main purpose for market research is it allows the gathering of data on consumers; this data is then used to make business/non business related decisions either if it’s making a new product. It’s important because it reduces risks towards the product production. Taking into consideration the cost, budget, time, potential target audience – (age, gender, income) these factors are very important while carrying out market research on a new product. Here is a good article I have found that examples the 5 main factors of market research; Behavior: Is the study of groups, organizations or individuals plus the processes they use to dispose of products, selecting, experiences or ideas that may impact on consumers in society, e.g. while hearing other people’s opinions can influence a consumers behavior towards a product, how they react to many different factors such as price and quality, and is it really worth the price for what it is and is it a need or want? Emotions also come into play before buying a product either it may be over budget or under budget. Family, Friends and the general public can influence on these decisions also. Advertisement Placement: ‘product placement’ is a form of advertising, the creator of the goods/service can gain exposure/audience by paying for their products to be broadcasted in television or featured before or during a film. This is usually common in American films or Television ads e.g. using celebrities to use the product hypes the product and attracts consumers who are a fan of the celebrity e.g. In her own music video of ‘Telephone’ Lady Gaga is seen with cans of Diet Coke in her hair as it’s creative and fun, it is seen as a product placement for fans of gaga and the drink to go out and buy it. Also, I used the internet as a main resource for searching up different types of films that were produced by Marvel that she told me she was interested in. – Link in part 4 to my weebly website to see full interview. Before my interview with Joanne Sweeney-Burke for my different Interview Techniques that will consist of the article interview write up featuring Joanne, Audio from an interview done for our social action project that I will link in part 4 to my website that will show more about Youthlife, and also visual that features my interview with Natasha Curry, that seeks more into her life also on my weebly blog that will be linked in part 4.In my Interview techniques assignment, I used a lot of Internet sources for my own research on what interviews are entertaining, hard-hitting etc. Youtube was my visual source to look and examine the interviews and see which one linked to each heading, Also looking underneath the comments to see what other people’s opinion on the interview they viewed was, if they liked it or if they didn’t and also the ratings on likes and views played a big role whilst looking at the interviews. – Link in part 4 to Weebly to View.Evaluation on Assignment Brief:From doing extensive research on this assignment brief and from other projects such as social action, my hero, Biosketch, Paired interviews, Interview techniques and preparing for other interviews that links into other assignments, I have came to a conclusion that research is very important in the media industry, As research is driven by consumers, if you don’t know what a consumer wants/needs to fulfill their standards then the product will not succeed. In our day in age our generation is on social media more than any other and when approaching target markets the product must be fitted to the consumer e.g. teenagers are always looking for the latest gadget – Iphone 6 and 6 plus. They want a product that will look sleek and will download their most used applications such as Facebook, Twitter. And that’s how information is gathered from one another in the present time. Also, Why research is so important it allows us to gain more knowledge e.g. before an interview with somebody you have never met, knowing more about an organization that you have never of heard of before, to hear other people’s opinions from past experiences with a product or a brand. It has made me realize that research is a massive part of every person’s life, Google is the biggest search engine in the world and is what mostly everyone uses now a days to seek out answers or ‘research’ different things that they have never heard or want to hear more about.Be able to present the results of research:Research is a vital part in the media industry, I have done a lot of research this semester with different assingments, From looking at my research assignment I have used the internet mainly for information and different sources but I should of used more books and more sources for my assignment, I feel like I should have used more references and added in more information from looking back at my assignments. My Weebly was greatly used for feedback from my fellow classmates in their opinions on my work that I have completed, and the comments from my classmates helped a lot by telling me the truth of what should be changed etc. In my interview techniques task I greatly used the Internet and also Youtube, to watch different interviews and use the sheet provided by my tutor Jim Doherty and he also gave us different sources that he printed himself for us as guidance. For my social action I provided a study of my hero, I provided all my planning work for the social action project I provided production paper work and a film, and I had my class review it and give me feedback on the forum on Weebly. In my research assignment part 1, I have evidence of using powerpoints, photobooth, I gave examples of charts and diagrams. For my sources I used moodle resources, I used the assignment briefs, I used the library to get hold of the recommended reading list, and I used extensive primary resources for interviews for social action. Also before conducting interviews I researched the person that I was interview with different sources such as Google search enginge Facebook and asking people who knew the person well i.e Seanan Martin who knew Bridie Sheridan who I interviewed for the social action project.Below you will find all the examples of screenshots from my weebly of the assignments that I have carried out research for. ................
