Read each version of the paragraph and answer the questions that follow.

This past weekend, I spent an afternoon at the beach. After securing a parking space, I effortlessly slid my toes through the warm, welcoming sand that gently embraced my bare feet. Once near the soothing ocean’s edge, I settled solidly into a secure spot. I rose and with the assistance of a friendly breeze spread my towel over the golden sand. When I calmly lay my body down, the breeze returned and brushed sand playfully over my face. I rose up on my elbows to free the sand of me, and the sun’s rays, like hot, soothing shower water flowed across my eyes. My eyes closed; I only felt the sun’s invigorating warmth massage my naked skin. From the water’s edge ballooned buoyant, beautiful sounds of a young lovers’ intimate conversation. As their loving talk turned ever sweeter, I slowly sank into slumber.

This past weekend, I spent an afternoon at the beach. After battling for a parking space, I trudged through blistering hot sand that assaulted my bare feet. Once near the ocean’s edge, I collapsed into a sticky, exhausted heap. I gathered my strength, and I fought the wind to spread my towel over the scorching sand. When I managed to lay my body down, the petulant wind pushed sand into my ears and nose. I shot up on my elbows to shake the sand free, and the sun’s rays, like flaming swords gouged at my eyes. I was blind; I only felt the sun’s accosting heat prick and pinch at my naked skin. From the water’s edge came squeaky scraps of a young lovers’ high-pitched conversation. As their inane talk buzzed louder, I feverishly fled the scene.
