This 75-hour course is comprised of lecture and activity design/preparation. This program meets the requirements of the state-approved curriculum. A certificate is awarded upon successful completion of the course.Fire Service Outreach ProgramsEssentials of Fire Fighter I is a 60-contact-hour course available only to members of Iowa volunteer fire departments. Through both classroom and hands-on instruction, this course teaches modules on firefighter safety, fire characteristics, fire suppression techniques, equipment usage, and fire prevention and public safety strategies. Certification testing is available through the Iowa Fire Service Training Bureau. You will be eligible to test following successful course completion.Essentials of Fire Fighter II is a 32-contact-hour course available only to members of Iowa volunteer fire departments who have completed Essentials of Fire Fighter I. Through both classroom and hands-on instruction, this course teaches modules on the Incident Management System, alarms and suppression systems, building collapse, rescue and extrication, hose tools and hydrants, foam fire stream systems, ignitable liquids and gases, communication and documentation. Certification testing is available through the Iowa Fire Service Training Bureau. You will be eligible to test following successful course completion.Health Care Provider CoursesIndian Hills Community College is an approved Training Center for the American Heart Association and is eligible to provide Healthcare Provider courses.AHA First Aid provides an introduction to the basic concepts of first aid. Identification and treatment of medical, environmental and injury emergencies will be discussed. This course meets the standards established by the American Heart Association.Healthcare Basic Life Support (BLS for Healthcare Providers) is designed to provide the student with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide basic life support and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) at the healthcare provider level based upon the current American Heart Association guidelines.The PALS Provider course prepares you to recognize infants and children at risk for cardiopulmonary arrest, identify strategies for preventing cardiopulmonary arrest in infants and children, and perform the cognitive and psychomotor skills for resuscitating and stabilizing infants and children in respiratory failure, shock, or cardiopulmonary arrest. Skills in bag-mask ventilation, management of airway, defibrillation and cardioversion, use of AEDs for children older than 8 years, and rhythm management are emphasized.The ACLS Provider course is designed to prepare you with the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate and manage the first 10 minutes of an adult VF/VT arrest. You will manage 10 core ALCS cases that include: respiratory emergency, four types of cardiac arrest, four types of pre-arrest emergencies, and stroke.Lay Rescuer CoursesThe Heartsaver AED course covers the basic techniques of adult CPR and use of an AED. You will also gain experience in the use of barrier devices in CPR and give first aid for choking in the responsive victim. The four major emergencies (heart attack, stroke, cardiac arrest, and foreign body airway obstruction) are discussed.The Heartsaver AED with Pediatric CPR course introduces the basic techniques of adult CPR and use of an AED. Pediatric CPR skills may be taught if you live or work in a setting where children are present. The use of barrier devices in CPR and the provision of first aid for choking for responsive adult, child, and infant victims are discussed. The four major emergencies (heart attack, stroke, cardiac arrest, and foreign body airway obstruction) are discussed.The Heartsaver CPR course prepares lay rescuers to recognize and treat life-threatening emergencies, including cardiac arrest and choking for responsive adult, child, and infant victims. The warning signs of a heart attack and stroke in adults and breathing difficulties in children are discussed. This program teaches rescue breathing with and without the use of barrier devices.The Heartsaver CPR with AED course prepares lay rescuers to recognize and treat life-threatening emergencies, including cardiac arrest and choking for adult, child, and infant victims and use of an AED for adult cardiac arrest victims. The warning signs of a heart attack and stroke in adults and breathing difficulties in children are discussed.The Heartsaver CPR in Schools course covers adult and pediatric lay rescuer CPR to middle and high school students. Information about the AHA adult and pediatric Chain of Survival, signs of a heart attack, cardiac arrest, stroke, and choking in adults is presented. Signs of choking in infants and children, prevention of the most common causes of fatal pediatric injuries, and the reduction of risk of sudden infant death syndrome are addressed.The CPR for Family and Friends course prepares lay rescuers with skills in CPR and relief of foreign body obstruction in the responsive victim. This 45-hour course meets the requirements of the state-mandated curriculum. The course has a combination of classroom, laboratory and clinical experiences. A certificate is awarded upon successful completion of the course. You must be a Licensed Practical Nurse in Iowa with the equivalent of one year full-time work experience.LPN SupervisionThe LPN Supervision program provides the licensed practical nurse with the knowledge and skills required to successfully manage resident care and personnel in the health care facility. This 42-hour course meets the requirements of the state-mandated curriculum as approved by the Iowa Board of Nursing through the Iowa Administrative Code. You must be a Licensed Practical Nurse in Iowa.Medication AideThe Medication Aide course prepares the Certified?Nurse Aide employed in a nursing facility, residential or living facility, to safely administer non-parenteral medications under direct supervision of a registered nurse. This 60-hour course is comprised of 40 hours of lecture and 20 hours of clinical experience in a long-term care facility. This program meets the requirements of the state-approved curriculum. A certificate is awarded upon successful completion of the course. You must be a certified nurse aide (CNA) on the state registry to take this program.Medication ManagerThe Medication Manager program prepares you to administer eye, ear, oral or topical medications to individuals in facilities housing 15 or fewer residents. This 22-hour course is comprised of 16 hours of lecture and 6 hours of laboratory skills and testing. A certificate is awarded upon successful completion of written and skills testing mandated by the state. This course meets the requirements of the state-approved curriculum.Nurse Aide (also listed as: Certified Nurse Aid (CNA) or Nursing Essentials I) The Nurse Aide program provides you with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to function as a Nurse's Aide in a health care facility. To qualify for employment in a long-term care facility, you must meet the requirements of this 75-hour course. This course is comprised of 45 hours of lecture and 30 hours of supervised clinical experience in a long-term care facility. In addition to course requirements, you must successfully complete the written and skills examinations mandated by the state. A certificate is awarded upon completion of these requirements. There are no prerequisites for this course, which meets the minimum requirements of the Iowa Department of Health, Inspections and Appeal Division.PhlebotomyThe Introduction to Phlebotomy course is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills required for blood collection in a health care setting. Venipuncture and skin puncture techniques will be discussed and demonstrated. A clinical component in a health care setting is required.Rehabilitation/Restorative AideThe Rehabilitation/Restorative Aide program prepares the certified nurse aide (CNA) to carry out rehabilitative plans of care written by a licensed physical therapist. This 65-hour course is comprised of lecture and laboratory experiences. This program meets the requirements of the state-approved curriculum. A certificate is awarded upon successful completion of the course. You must be a certified nurse aide (CNA) on the state registry to take this program. ................
