All Hallows High School10th grade Chemistry SyllabusMr. TagliaTeacher Contact Information: E-mail: mtaglia@Phone #: (718)-293-4545 Extension (332) Required Textbook:- Pearson Chemistry 2017 ed. (Access at ) available on Chromebook- No hard copy textbook required Course Objective: Chemistry is defined as the study of matter. In this course we will uncover the secrets behind the matter that makes up the world around us. In doing so we will learn how different forms of matter interact, and how knowledge of chemistry can be applied to technology in society.Course Outline:The areas of study in this course will be divided into the following units:Unit 1: Intro to chemistryUnit 8: Properties of SolutionUnit 2: The AtomUnit 9: Kinetics and EquilibriumUnit 3: Chemical Formulas and EquationsUnit 10: ElectrochemistryUnit 4: StoichiometryUnit 11: Acids & BasesUnit 5: Physical Behavior of MatterUnit 12: Organic ChemistryUnit 6: The Periodic TableUnit 13: Nuclear ChemistryUnit 7: Chemical BondingUnit 14: Regents Review or Research Projects**In addition to these course requirements. Students taking the state regents exam must complete at least 1200 minutes of laboratory work.***Students not taking the regents will have various activities substituted for the regular lab activities, and a research project due at the end of the school year.Classroom Rules: Don’t Be Late!If you’re on time, you’re late…This one’s pretty simple, just get to class on time, this means ready to go when the bell rings, if not I may send you to wait in the hall at the beginning of class. If you have a note from another teacher why you’re late then get settled as quickly as possible.Listen when people are talkingI hear everything…This can be a tricky rule for a lot of students so let me make this clear: there should NOT be any talking going on in class unless we are doing an activity that allows for conversation. No Cell Phones!!!!!I don’t care what iphone you have, I don’t want to see or hear phones in class. If I see it, then I take it. And if I hear it, then you have two choices, I can take it, or I can give the whole class detention afterschool. (I know this is strict, but it’s a school policy that I strongly support)This is not the Cafeteria….No Food, No Drinks… pretty easy to follow. A piece of advice you don’t want to put anything near your face in a lab where dangerous chemicals have been used and spilt. Please Don’t Forget You’re in a Classroom…I shouldn’t have to explain this one, just be aware of your surroundings, and don’t do things you know you will get in trouble for like throwing things, hitting each other, yelling out, etc.If you don’t come to class Prepared then you’re going to Pay for it…You shouldn’t arrive to class, and realize you don’t have your notebook, or a pen, or any other materials you knew you were going to need. However, if you do come to class unprepared don’t worry I’ll have a lot of spare materials ready to go, but it will cost you 10 cents per itemGrading Policy:- Homework (30%): You will usually receive homework every night that will take no more than 30-45 minutes. The homework will always be posted on the school website, and you can sign up for notifications through email. The policy for missed homework is that you will receive a zero for the assignment, and homework clinic. If an assignment is missed it can be made up for half credit, but the student must see the teacher, and fill out a “homework makeup” form in order to do so.If an assignment is incomplete it may be accepted, however three incompletes add up to one missed homework and homework clinic will need to be served.- Quizzes (15 %): You will have periodic quizzes to make sure you are paying attention in class, and completing the homework assignments on your own. Many of my quizzes are notebook checks, which are open notebook quizzes based off of the class notes. (Usually twice a month on the 15th and 30th)- Lab Activities (15 %): You will complete either labs or other various activities on the days you have me for DEAR period, and a take home assignment for each activity. The assignments are self-explanatory based on whatever activity we are doing,- Tests (30 %): At the end of each unit you will have a test on the material we’ve covered, you will have the whole period for these tests, and if you receive below a 60 % you must come afterschool for extra review- Classroom Grade (10 %): This is NOT a participation grade, it is a grade on a scale from 0-100 that is based on how well you can follow the classroom rules outlined on this syllabus.*****Cheating Policy*****If I catch you cheating on a test or copying a homework assignment from another student you will receive a zero and a call to your parents…If you let another student cheat off of you (intentionally or unintentionally) you will also receive a zeroExtra Help: I will always try to make myself available for after-school help; my office hours are on the door of the room. If you have questions about homework, test material, or just any issue in general I urge you to come see me for help. Please don’t wait until the morning of the test to ask me review questionsFinal Statement: Above all else, I appreciate hard work. I enjoy when I see my students working their hardest, and putting forth the best possible effort they can. Science isn’t an easy subject for all students to grasp, but I want my students to rise to the challenge of a difficult course. If I see students struggling with the material, but genuinely working hard to learn the material by putting in hours afterschool, then I will take that into account when I’m compiling your class averages.Course SuppliesBelow is a list of supplies you will need for my class. Try to get to the store at some point during the first week of classes to get any supplies you may not have:Notebook (for class notes) or Google Chrome Book(Not needed everyday, but if we are using it and you do not have it with you or not properly charged, you will lose points to your classroom grade)Folder (for handouts)Folder (for labs)I will supply one of these for all studentsPens and PencilsRecommended scientific calculatorCalculatorIndex CardsChemistry reference tableI will supply one of these fro all students*Note to parent/guardian* Please be sure go over this syllabus with your child, so you can understand what is expected of him this year.
