Crafting an Effective ArgumentIntroduction: In an effective argument, the writer will demonstrate his/her beliefs using the key components that we previously discussed (i.e. claim, evidence). It is important to note that the key components should be structured in a way that demonstrates the writer’s point of view and clearly details the facts and supporting details. Today, you will practice crafting the main elements of an argumentative essay.Activity: Class will pair up into groups of 2-3 students.Groups will count off by twos with each group being either the number 1 or 2. All of the ones will take the “Pro” stance while the twos will take the “Con” stance.Groups will use to craft a basic argumentative outline regarding the following topic: “Is Homework Beneficial?”Groups will be given an argumentative graphic organizer (see below) on which they will work together to outline the major points of their argument. As a whole class, we will discuss the expectations for the graphic organizer.Groups will need to first read through the “Background of the Issue” section on the website to gain valuable background knowledge.Groups will then read through the various pros and cons on the website for both sides of the issue. Groups will fill out the organizer to demonstrate the major points of their argument.Thesis/Position StatementClaim #1Fact(s)/Supporting detail(s)Claim #2Fact(s)/Supporting detail(s)CounterclaimThe whole class will come back together to discuss the major points that each group made and further our discussion on effective argument writing.Group Members: _________________________________Period: ________Argument UnitDate: ________________Crafting an Effective Argument Graphic OrganizerTHESIS/POSITION STATEMENT: State your group’s belief on the issue of homework.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________CLAIM & REASONING: Identify two different claims that are given for your side of the argument.
