Headlines

Submissions for the FRHS OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARD are due April 1. See the end of this newsletter for more information!

Any student who wishes to take an AP Exam must submit their payment of $53 per exam to their AP teacher by March 15. Fee reductions are available to those who demonstrate financial need. (A handout with more details was distributed to all AP students on March 8.)

College and Career Fair at St. Marys High School: Tuesday, March 15 from 5:30-7 p.m. – over 50 businesses, military, colleges and universities will be represented. Learn about the military, employment, and education opportunities. This is a great fair for late-planning seniors and early-planning juniors. Students and parents are encouraged to attend! 2016 STATE TESTING SCHEDULE (end of course exams):

Friday, April 22: Biology (12:00-3:15 p.m.)

• Periods 1-4 on regular schedule, lunch will be from 11:19-12:00

• Sophomores, juniors and seniors not testing will be dismissed at 11:19 a.m. (staying for lunch is optional)

• Students are encouraged to bring something along to study/read in case they finish testing early

Monday, April 25: Algebra I and Government (8:15 a.m. - ?? )

Tuesday, April 26: American History and Geometry (8:15 a.m. - ?? )

Wednesday, April 27: English 9 and English 10 (8:15 a.m. - ?? )

• Periods 1-8 will follow the 2-hour delay schedule

• Juniors and Seniors not testing should report to HS commons at 10:12 a.m. and wait for 1st period bell

• Tri-Star Seniors will report to FRHS at 10:12 a.m. for periods 1 & 2 (can leave at 11:20 a.m.) and must make arrangements with their 3rd & 4th period teachers for missed assignments

• Ag Co-Op students (who usually leave at 11:20 a.m.) must remain in class until 12:26 p.m.

• Tri-Star Juniors will begin FRHS classes at 1:11 p.m.

Busses will run on regular schedule. Study Hall (Media Center) is available to bus riders who are not testing.

Summer Opportunities

Seniors…

Planning a senior trip? You may want to avoid Saturday, June 18, 2016. That is the date of the FR Alumni Association’s annual banquet. All seniors are invited to attend, and if you are lucky enough to win an Alumni Scholarship, your attendance at the banquet is required.

Have you stayed true to your DARE promise to not use drugs or alcohol, or have made a new resolution to live drug free? If so, you are invited to the annual DARE Luncheon on April 12, 2016 at the Elk’s Club on 127 south of Celina.  Students attending will leave FRHS at 10:45 a.m. and return around 2:00 p.m. Students wishing to attend should contact Mrs. Billenstien ASAP.

DID YOU KNOW…

Colleges can rescind your admission in the summer of your senior year. This means that simply getting accepted now doesn’t guarantee that you can attend next fall. Colleges DO look at your final senior grades and can revoke your acceptance, so keep working hard!

Underclassmen…

Mercer Health is offering a "Medical Exploring Program" for 9th graders in April.  Students will be able to explore future volunteer and career opportunities and learn more about Mercer Health.  There will be a presentation and a behind the scenes tour of the hospital.  Several career field will be explored-- not just nursing.

This 1/2 day field trip will be in April....date TBA. Sign up in the Guidance Office by March 29 if you would like to attend!

Students planning to take English Composition (senior class), Advanced Biology & Genetics, or Anatomy/Physiology next year should register to take the ACT this spring (or summer). A test score is required to become eligible for the college credit that FRHS offers for these courses. (Younger students taking Computer Apps will have the opportunity to take an alternate placement test at FRHS.)

Essay contest for 9th-10th graders: the Mercer County RTL is sponsoring an essay contest and prizes range from $50-$150. All applicants must submit an essay (500-800 words) with the title “Why I Am Pro Life” and will receive a free pro-life t-shirt. Contact Janelle Homan at janellepoeppelman@ for more info. Wright State Lake Campus offers a BS in Nursing

Vocational:

1. The GROB Apprenticeship Program is offering FREE Associate’s Degrees to Rhodes State College for students majoring in Manufacturing Engineering Technology and Electrical Engineering Technology and FREE first 2 years tuition for those moving on to earn their Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Bowling Green, Ohio Northern, Miami University, University of Dayton, or the University of Toledo. Benefits include FREE insurance and cash bonuses. Informational Open Houses and testing dates are offered throughout the month of March and April. See Mrs. Kaiser ASAP if you are interested!

2. See the scholarship near the end of this newsletter. Scholarships are available for several certifications at vocational schools.

3. There is a need for skilled labor positions (construction, pipe fitting, sheet metal, electricians, ironworkers, HVAC, heavy equipment operators/engineers, cement and masonry, etc.). See Mrs. Kaiser for more information on Apprenticeship Programs and how to earn a Journeyman’s Card.

4. Manufacturing Careers are in high demand in our area. An increasing number of high-tech jobs are unfilled because the demand is so great. Electricians, Welders, Engineers, etc. are needed. Twenty-five percent of the workforce in West Central Ohio is in manufacturing. The median wage for skilled trades/manufacturing is $50,000 per year.

5. Apollo Career Center (Lima) offers many adult-education classes and certification programs in skilled trades. Call Doug Durliat at 419.995.8353 if you would like more information.

Military:

Interested in joining the military after graduation?

• Joining the military can help fund your college education

• You need to take the ASVAB test to be considered for enlistment.

• Military recruiters visit FRHS (and homes) throughout the year. For additional information about a career in the military, visit .

Attention students in grades 9-11: If you are interested in applying for admission to a US Military Academy, start planning NOW. Academy Nomination Applications (US Air Force, Military, Naval and Merchant Marine Academies) are due in September or October of your senior year. It is a very prestigious honor to attend a military academy, and admission is highly competitive.

• Junior year is when the Academy application process truly begins. Students will start by filling out the Pre-Candidate Questionnaire, which becomes available online March 1 every year.

• Between March 1 of their junior year and December 31 of their senior year, students must also request nominations from a designated nomination category.

• See Mrs. Kaiser ASAP if you are interested in a US Military Academy.

College:

1. Most FRHS students have HS credits that will transfer to college. Ask your college adviser, and advocate for yourself!!

a. Students enrolled in English Composition (& Literature), Adv. Biology & Genetics, and Computer Apps need to request a transcript from Rhodes State (after they graduate) to take with them to college.

b. Articulated Credit: We currently have articulation agreements with some area colleges (WSU Lake, UNOH, for example) for FRHS courses in Accounting, Ag, Tri-Star, etc.

c. FRHS students can take an AP Exam (sign up is in March) to try to earn college credits. If you are taking an AP course, you need to study hard, and take the test!!

2. Attn: Students looking for housing in Dayton (near WSU/Sinclair, etc.): A local family owns a 4-bedroom house in Dayton that is set up for student housing. Call 419-305-2597.

4. John Jay Center for Learning (affiliated with Ivy Tech State College and Indiana Wesleyan) in Portland, IN offers beginning-level college courses at a very reasonable cost Call 260-729-5525.

5. Ohio public college main campuses no longer offer developmental classes for students who don’t test into entry level courses. Those students will need to take their developmental classes at a regional campus or community colleges.

6. Prospective College Athletes who plan to play Division I or II sports must register with the appropriate clearinghouse. Both eligibility centers require that test scores (i.e. ACT) be sent directly from the testing agency. See Mrs. Kaiser if you need to register with either of these athletic clearinghouses because I need to mail your transcript to them! Cost is approximately $75.

2. Students interested in job shadowing at Mercer Health should contact the Education Coordinator at 419-678-5119 to request a job-shadowing packet. Be specific about the area(s) you are interested in (you can list more than one). Students are required to get a Tb test prior to shadowing.

3. The Mercer County Sherriff’s Office sponsors an “explorers program” for students interested in careers in law enforcement. Call Captain Mark Heinll at 419-586-7724.

3. Imagine America Scholarship for 2016 graduates: FRHS can select up to three students to receive this $1000 scholarship—FRHS will award this to the first 3 eligible students who apply each year. Only recent high school graduates who are qualified applicants and who meet the following recommended guidelines should apply: Likelihood of successful completion of postsecondary education, high school grade point average of 2.5 or greater, financial need, and demonstrated voluntary community service during the senior year Students must plan to attend a “career college” (such as Lincoln Tech or Kaplan) to be eligible. 4. Specialized Carriers & Rigging Foundation is offering $1000-$5000 grants to individuals looking to take a continuing education course (such as welding or diesel mechanics) or attend vocational/technical college. Apply online at . Grants are awarded throughout the year.

5. Sussle Scholarship ($500): Sussle is an encyclopedia of the things YOU care about. This is not your usual scholarship. There is no application or essay, and it's actually fun. By participating, you will be posting your knowledge for the benefit of others, and in return, the best contributor will win the scholarship. Eligibility: HS seniors and college students. 6. Zumper, a free apartment rental search site it sponsoring a $1,000 college scholarship. As a background on Zumper, here are their listings for Columbus: . They are looking for outstanding students who have helped their classmates or community in a tremendous way. Maybe you started a club that raised $10,000 for charity, or championed recycling and sustainable practices across campus. 7. 4-H Scholarships: Ohio 4-H offers a variety of scholarships to its members—most of these being for current year graduates and a few for members already attending college. 8. Rhodes State offers a variety of scholarships:

a. College Credit Plus (CC+)- $1000 for students who successfully complete a course at Rhodes their senior year. There are several FRHS students eligible for this award. Due January 15/May 1.

b. Tech Prep- $1000 for students in a Tech Prep program at Tri-Star. Due May 1.

c. Rhodes to Success- $1000 Academic Scholarship. 3.5 cum GPA and 24 ACT required. Due May 1.

d. Associates of Arts or Sciences; $1000 –Start your bachelor’s degree coursework at Rhodes and save money! Deadline is August 12, 2016.

9. Mercer County Elks is offering several scholarships. Visit for more information.

a. Emergency Educational Grants are available to children of deceased or totally disabled Elks. Contact Jane Heiby at 419-925-4232 for more information.

10. Seniors- The Formula for Life Run will take place at Ft. Recovery High School on Sunday, March 6 at 2 p.m. All benefits go to an orphanage in Haiti. HS seniors who participate will be eligible to win a $1000 scholarship. Each person you recruit for the race counts as an additional vote for you towards winning the scholarship! Visit and search “Scholarship Run” to get registered. This is a very easy way to win a scholarship, and will help a child in need!!

11. IPFW is offering a variety of scholarships at . Students must apply by March 10.

12. Paul Lefeld Family Memorial Scholarship: Three $1000 awards will be given to a senior enrolling in a technical school or university and majoring in agriculture. Deadline is March 11.

13. BP Scholarship (females, grade 12): The Fluorine Chapter Scholarship Committee will be looking for young women with a profound interest in chemistry and those who can convey their commitment to science. Award recipients will receive a $2,000 cash award and a Certificate of Recognition. Applications can be found at iotasigmapi-. Deadline is March 14.

14. Michelle Bruggeman Volunteer Award: $500 cash will be awarded to a Mercer County senior who has demonstrated outstanding volunteerism. This award is open to all seniors, and applicants need not attend college to apply. Deadline is March 15.

15. James Kura Memorial Scholarship Essay Competition, sponsored by the Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers is open to seniors who are accepted to an accredited 4 year school for next year. See the website for more information: scholarship. Applications are due by March 15.

16. Leitzell Family Foundation Agricultural/ Horticultural Scholarship Award (Grade 12): It is the intent of this scholarship to provide financial aid to any individual from Mercer County, Ohio who shows continuous interest and enthusiasm in the field of agriculture or horticulture. Such interests could be manifested through active participation in such programs as 4-H, FFA, Scouts, etc. and must be continued into secondary education in appropriate career-oriented programs. The initial scholarship varies from $1500-$5000 and may be renewable. The recipient must maintain at least a 2.75 cumulative GPA for renewal. Applications must be returned to the FRHS Guidance Office by March 17.

17. Building Industry Association of Central Ohio: Open to HS seniors and current college students majoring in building, architecture, financial, design, marketing, communications, and many others in the business community. More information can be found at: . Applications are due March 18.

18. The University Women’s Club of Mercer County has 2 programs available for females planning to continue their education in pursuit of a baccalaureate degree:

a. Annual Scholarship Loans for $700 (renewable for 4 years) Repayment of these interest-free loans begins one year after termination of college.

b. Annual Scholarship Grants for $1000

Only one application is necessary for both programs. Call Kelly Hone at 419-305-2117 if you have questions. Applications are due March 31.

19. South Shore Sportsman Club Inc. will offer a $500 scholarship to high school graduates or college students pursuing a field in conservation and/or wildlife management, or fields related to these vocations. Applications are due March 31.

20. ACME Baseball Scholarship: Five $500 awards will be given. Requirements include: must have played at least one year Varsity Acme Baseball and a 2.5 minimum GPA. Applications due April 1.

21. Mercer County Retired Teachers: This $500 scholarship is open to students majoring in education (2 or 4 year program). Applicants must have a G.P.A. of 2.8 or higher and demonstrate financial need. Applications are due April 1.

22. Randy Griesdorn Memorial Scholarship: $1000 will be awarded to a senior who will be majoring in auto/body, auto mechanics (or related field), diesel mechanics, Technology (precision machining, welding, or electronics. Applications are due April 1.

23. Mercer County Farm Bureau Scholarship: Students entering college in the fall (or current college freshmen) majoring in Agriculture are eligible. Parents of the applicant must be members of the Mercer County Farm Bureau in good standing. A $500 scholarship will be given and student must maintain a 2.0 GPA for the quarter/semester. Applications are due April 1.

24. Racing for Relief Scholarship ($500): Applicants must be involved in the Racing for Relief organization (Mercer County: see ) Open to seniors and current college students. Applications due April 1.

25. Lefeld Welding Scholarship: Two $1000 grants will be awarded to graduating seniors affiliated with Tri-Star Award must be used for skilled trade training in a metal working occupation. Applications due April 1.

26. Mote & Associates Scholarship (Greenville, Ohio): The scholarship is for a commendable student seeking a post high school education or enrolled in an accredited college program in the field of engineering, surveying, architecture, or a closely related field of study. Applications can be completed on-line at ; or may be requested by contacting the company at 937-548-7511. Applications must be returned to the office of Mote & Associates, Inc., 214 West Fourth Street, Greenville, OH 45331 by April 1.

27. William D. Squires Scholarships: The William D. Squires Scholarship is primarily need-based and is only for students from Ohio. (Each applicant must have an EFC (from FAFSA/SAR) of less than $8,000.) A minimum GPA of 3.2 is required. Applications are available at: . Apply from February 15-April 5.

28. Gordon Orthodontics is offering a $1000 scholarship to HS seniors who are or were previous patients. This scholarship is for seniors, and a minimum 3.5 GPA and ACT score of 24 are recommended (not required). Applicants must demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, strong participation in school activities (particularly as it relates to the arts) and community service. Application deadline is April 5.

29. Nursing Scholarship (JTD Hospital Foundation): To be eligible for the scholarship, the individual must be a high school senior, current college student, or adult returning to school who is a resident of Auglaize of Mercer counties or graduate of a high school in those counties. Final applicants will be chosen and must be available for interview in June. Call 419-394-3387 ext. 3567 for more information. Applications due in April.

30. The Ohio Association of Career Colleges and Schools (in conjunction with the Ohio Legislature) is awarding over 200 scholarships to 2016 graduating seniors. These awards range from $1,000-$11,750. Applicants must plan to attend one of the specific career-technical (Ohio) colleges listed on the application. All are associate’s degree or diploma programs…Accounting, Business, Computer, Criminal Justice, Dental Assisting, Electronics, Medical Assisting, Nursing, Paralegal, Technology, Vet Tech, Visual Communications and more! Deadline is April 9.

31. DP&L/Vectren Energy Leadership Scholarship (3-$1000 awards): This scholarship is designed to honor graduating seniors who demonstrate effective leadership skills and energy knowledge. Applications can be found at . Due date is April 15.

32. C.R. Meyers Memorial Scholarship ($1000): Applicants (Mercer County) must be (or will be) enrolled in a major relating to environmental sciences or environmental education at an accredited Ohio college, university, or technical school. Applications can be found at and are due April 15.

33. Harris Law Firm is offering one $1,000 scholarship to help an Ohio student further his or her educational aspirations. To apply, the student will create a short (30-120 second) video telling us about the superhero or superheroes that have influenced their education. Also, they will tell us how this scholarship will help them reach their goals! This scholarship is open to HS seniors and current college students. More information can be found at:  . 34. King, Koligian & Associates, LLC is offering a $2,500 scholarship to help one Ohio student go to college, law school, or other institute of higher education. To apply, create a short (30–120 second) video and essay telling about one of two topics—see Mrs. K for more info. Due date is April 30.

35. B. Davis Scholarship ($1000): This website was developed solely for the purpose of helping students locate and apply for scholarships, and is open to junior and seniors: . Deadline is May 23.

36. Aspiring Animation Professional Scholarship Program ($1000): Open to seniors who: intend to pursue an animation related field at an accredited post-secondary school or college. Visit the website for more information: , and search “scholarships”. Deadline to apply is June 1.

37. Aspiring Fashion Professional Scholarship ($1000) for students that are interested in pursuing a fashion degree at an accredited post-secondary school or college. More info can be found at (at the bottom of the page). Deadline is June 1.

38. Trent Bates Memorial Scholarship: Applicants must be graduating seniors from a Mercer County HS and a member of a Mercer County 4H club, FFA, Boy/Girl Scouts, going into Equine Science or Veterinary Science or a Vet Tech Program. GPA of 2.0 Is required. Applications due June 1.

39. The Mercer County Civic Foundation has a small pool of student loan funds available to undergraduate students. These low-interest $900 college loans are renewable, and the 4% interest rate does not begin to accrue until 6 months after graduation from college, and are interest-free if repaid within that time. Interested students should call Carol Hone at 419/586-9950 for an application. Applications are due by June 1.

40. Abbott & Fenner Business Consultants Scholarship: To apply for this $1,000 scholarship you will need to write an essay on the topic found on the website. The A&F Scholarships are available to all high school juniors and seniors as well as all students currently registered in any accredited post secondary institution who are between the ages of 16 and 30. 41. BigSun Scholarship: The BigSun Organization is offering a $500 scholarship to a student athlete. The successful applicant will be a high school senior participating in a sport OR be attending a post secondary institute and currently involved in some sport at that institution. 42. Loans for Future Medical Students: The Medical Educational Foundation Academy of Medicine of Lima and Allen County usually offers no-interest loans to assist with tuition while students are in medical school. If interested, call Susan L. Hubbell, M.D. at (419) 226-9567.

43. Wright State University offers FREE TUITION to all graduating valedictorians and salutatorians in the state of Ohio. Visit scholarships@wright.edu for more information.

44. 4-H Scholarships: Ohio 4-H offers a variety of scholarships to its members—most of these being for current year graduates and a few for members already attending college. 45. Catholic Order of Foresters offers a $5000 fraternal scholarship to HS juniors. Applications will be accepted January 1 – August 31 of each year. Applicants must be individually insured COF members in good standing for at least two years prior to applying See for more information.

46. AES Engineers Scholarship ($500-open to all majors): Applicants must answer one of the essay questions from the website at . Their belief is that achieving a high grade point average should not be the only criteria for determining who deserves to be helped. For that reason they are offering a scholarship that will be awarded on the basis of character, as determined by evaluating the essays that are submitted. Deadline is October 6, 2016.

47. Briarwood Village/HCF Grant-In-Aid Scholarship Program: available to applicants who has been an HCF employee for at least 1 year and have a history of above average performance appraisals. The Mercer County STOP (Students Teaching Others Prevention) is a group where high school students can meet new friends who can support them in times of negative peer pressure. The STOP group comes together to learn about ways to stand strong in their belief not to use alcohol, tobacco, drugs, as well as help prevent bullying and suicide. NEW members are welcome! You can participate if you are drug free or want to be encouraged to start over. Contact Laura Sanford at 419-584-1000 for more information. There is a great group (at least 17 attend each meeting) and they meet the 2nd Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. See Mrs. Billenstein for more information!

The Mercer County Students for Life meet monthly and act as pro-life ambassadors; providing public education and sponsor various events & activates. Students are encouraged to “like' Mercer County Students for Life on Facebook to learn more.

Camp ENGOURAGE (formerly Camp BEARable) will be held July 15-17 and is sponsored by State of the Heart Hospice. The camp is FREE for children ages 6-15 who are grieving the loss of a loved one.
