Experiment: FTIR Experiment on Trade-OffsPurpose: To investigate signal to noise ratio in a spectrum through parameter adjustments. Background: infrared causes molecular rotation and vibration which allows it to be used in the analysis of organic molecules. The goal of this lab is to investigate how resolution and scan rates affect quality of the spectrum and to discuss trade-offs in collecting data.Procedure:Resolution: Set scan range 4000-500 cm-1, 8 scans to collect background spectrum. Then a sample spectrum with the same parameters. Then, collect a background and sample spectrums at the following resolutions: 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 cm-1.Number of Scans:With 4 cm-1 resolution, collect background and sample spectra for 1, 4, 8, 16, 64 number of scans.Required Analysis:For the resolution data, calculate S/N ratio in two regions 2200-2000 and 600-500 cm-12. Make a plot of S/N ratio (y axis) to spectral resolution (x axis) for the two regions. For the number of scan data calculate the S/N ratio from 2200-2000 cm-1.Make a plot of S/N ratio (y axis) to number of scans (x axis). Discuss how spectral acquisition time varies with number of scans.Discuss trade offs in collecting data.Short Lab Report Rubrics:Data collected during lab:Resolution cm-1Background ScanSample Scan0.54 min.3 min 22 sec12 min 15 sec2 min21 min 24 sec1 min, 2 sec41 min54 sec824 sec26 sec1615 sec12 sec3210 sec12 secNumber of ScansBackground ScanSample Scan111 sec10 min 25 sec421 sec26 min 56 sec161 min 25 sec1 min 17 sec645 min 38 sec5 min 40 secWrite a short lab report that includes the sections mentioned above with the instructions provided here and the attached spectral data.
