Real Number System Project

Due Date: __________________________

Directions –

Create a mental organizer to visually represent the differences between rational and irrational numbers.

Steps –

1. Your mental organizer needs to be an original idea. Your design should have two main parts: rational numbers and irrational numbers. Choose a design that shows how rational numbers are divided into subsets. Your design to represent irrational numbers should be a play on the word “irrational.”

Example Ideas (You may not use these for your project)

Idea 1: Great Pyramid at Giza (3 burial chambers and Grand Gallery) and Aliens (irrational)

Idea 2: Pizza layers (Crust, sauce, cheese, toppings) and Drink with “crazy” straw (irrational)

Idea 3: Tree trunk layers (bark, cambium, sapwood, heartwood, pith) and chainsaw (irrational)

2. For rational numbers, provide 5 examples for each subset. For irrational numbers, provide 5 examples as well.

3. Include a large, clearly marked number line with at least 15 points for the following real numbers:

Rational Numbers

2 points must be simple fractions

2 points must be terminating decimals

2 points must be repeating decimals

4 points must be integers.

*Don’t forget to include positive and negative integers.

*At least one integer should be represented as a perfect square root.

Irrational Numbers

1 point must represent the value for pi

2 points must be imperfect square roots

2 points must be non-repeating decimals

***Important: There should be almost equal numbers of positive and negative real numbers on your number line.

4. Include 6 math problems; one problem must be a real world problem. At least 5 irrational numbers must be used. Only one integer may be used per problem.

5. Use rulers when appropriate. I want neat projects!

6. Use crayons, colored pencils or markers to make your project creative and visually appealing. You may sketch in pencil but you should not turn in your final project in only pencil. You will lose points.

7. Include your name, period and due date.

Grading Rubric

50 Points

1. Student’s design for rational numbers was creative and showed all subsets _____/ 7

of rational numbers. Student properly identified/labeled all 5 subsets.

2. Student’s design for irrational numbers was creative and accurately labeled. _____/ 5

3. Student accurately provided 5 examples for each type of real number _____/ 8

4. Student’s number line was neatly drawn WITH A RULER, had the number _____/10

zero in the middle with an equal number of integers to the left and right.

Student accurately placed and labeled 15 real numbers on the number line

according to the guidelines provided on direction sheet.

5. Student included 6 math problems using both rational and irrational numbers, _____/10

one of which is a word problem. Student’s work was neat, showed the steps

necessary to solve the problem and included the circled/highlighted answer.

6. Student’s work was very neat, legible and COLORFUL. _____/10
