SCHOOLS WILL BE OPEN ON VETERANS DAY

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2012 For Immediate Release, Monday, November 5, 2012

Board of Education Chair Leslie Moriarty has announced that all public schools will be open on Monday, November 12, 2012. Schools were previously scheduled to be closed on this day in observance of Veterans Day and it was to be a professional learning day for staff.

Ms. Moriarty said, "It is important to begin to make up for the six days that students have missed due to the impact of Hurricane Sandy. Each school will conduct programs that acknowledge the contributions and sacrifices of this country's veterans on Monday. The professional learning activites planned for November 12th will be rescheduled for later in the year."

Additional changes to the 2012-13 School Calendar will be reviewed by the Board of Education in upcoming meetings. While it is too early to make decisions regarding the last day of school, please note that we have now used the five "snow/storm days" that are built into the school calendar, plus one additional day. Restoring Veterans Day to the calendar for students will bring us back to five missed schools days. The last day of school is scheduled for June 24th, with five snow/storm days built in. In accordance with the notice on the school calendar, make-up days may be taken from the Spring Recess (4/15-19) and/or added to the end of June (6/25-28). However, all school holidays and vacation days will be considered for making up any further lost instructional time.
