SchumerSenate Democrat Leader322 Hart Senate Office BuildingWashington, D.C. 20510Honorable Mitch McConnellSenate Republican Leader317 Russell Senate Office Building Washington DC 20510RE: Equality Act (S.393)(H.R.5)Dear Senators Durbin, Schumer, and McConnell:My name is ________________ and I am the pastor of __________________. I currently reside in ____________________. I am writing to express my opposition to the “Equality Act,” which threatens religious freedom in our nation. By adding “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” as protected classes to existing laws banning discrimination, the Act will force churches to abandon their belief in the Bible’s teaching on human sexuality. Because churches are also subject to accommodation laws, the Act will further force churches to open women’s private changing areas and restrooms to biological men at all public activities. If churches refuse to comply, they will face crippling fines and even jail time. These actions are unacceptable in a country that upholds freedom of conscience and religious liberty. Without a further definition of the phrases “sexual orientation” and “gender identity,” this radical bill would codify federal protection of many forms of sexually deviant behaviors including incest, pedophilia, necrophilia, and bestiality. In addition, The Act will force churches and religious schools to employ people whose actions conflict with the church’s or school’s beliefs and may force schools to abandon faith-based standards for student conduct. The “Equality Act” will also contradict “The Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993” (42 U.S.C. 2000bb et seq.) in its protection of churches and other religious institutions. The result will be the chaos and expense of numerous constitutional challenges throughout the nation. If passed, the Act will likely and regrettably be used to vilify Americans who are unwilling to agree with these new beliefs—Americans like us who believe and teach that traditional views of marriage, gender, and sexual orientation are not baggage from an uncivil past, but rather the glorious design by the Creator of all. We are concerned that the Act will be exploited by those who are determined to stamp out every expression of dissent from their beliefs.Legislation cannot legitimize conduct declared immoral by the Christian-Judeo Scriptures. Just because one has the right to do something, does not mean it is the right thing to do. The passage of this Act would be nothing short of declaring war on people of faith. Please oppose The Equality Act, without compromise. Nothing good is accomplished by opposing the traditional values cherished by many Americans.Thank you, NameAddress Contact ................
