Adult Basic Education Presentation

A. Dinkel-VanValkenburg informed the Youth Council members of a soft launch of the Adult Basic Education (ABE) website, for the St. Cloud and Central Minnesota consortium. Amy stated ABE serves 26 school districts across central Minnesota which includes an east region and a west region. ABE has been somewhat difficult to brand and also for people to find in all the different communities, therefore, this website was created to share information about the ABE programs and help support people as they achieve their education goals.

A. Dinkel-VanValkenbug introduced Jennifer Nobel, Supervisor of ISD #742 Community Education. Jennifer thanked the group for having her and said she is

very excited about the website. Jennifer stated the branding logo was designed by the students of the St. Cloud Technical College's Northway Design Group. She demonstrated the details of the website including the home page which states the ABE mission and outlines the consortium sites, programs, contact information and displays photos in effort to tell their story. The website was designed to be easily navigated and has links to diploma classes, language classes, digital literacy, citizenship, job search and parenting classes. It also illustrates a map which pins all 26 consortium site locations. There is a contact form for students to complete if they have an interest in the program and ABE will follow up with that particular student. The site also includes information and photos from graduating classes. It was designed to highlight all the different partners in the community and also all of the volunteer opportunities specific to each site. The ABE main office is now located at the new Quarryview Elementary School in Waite Park. T. Biery stated the map is a great idea to get a visual of where all the sites are located. A. Dinkle-VanValkenburg presented a PowerPoint which gave details about the Central MN Adult Basic Education (ABE) program. The PowerPoint described the website, branding, and the connection with Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). In 2014 WIOA defined what adult education and literacy was, which strengthened ABE's ability to work more solidly with their partners to get students through their education pathways and into careers. Jennifer stated that many times when people think of ABE they think GED. ABE is Adult Basic Education and not just GED. GED is one part of the standardized testing that can be taken for Adult Basic Education and sometimes people confuse the two. T. Biery commented that Career Solutions has developed one of the strongest partnerships with ABE to get students educated. I. Merten stated we are working with ABE in a partnership at Electrolux to get students through the IMT program. 2017 YouthBuild Annual Report ? I. Merten stated the YouthBuild Annual Report is attached and was submitted to DEED. T. Biery stated the youth from YouthBuild will be getting certificates from the Carpenters Union if they complete activities from Book 1 and Book 2. This certificate can be used to increase their opportunities within the union.

Agenda Item Information/Other

Summary CareerONE Manufacturing Component ? I. Merten discussed the idea of adding a

manufacturing component to CareerONE which might include First aid, CPR, and an OSHA Safety curriculum. We will continue to explore this area to see what our curriculum options are as we think about the upcoming startup of CareerONE for next year. Initiative Foundation Grant ? I. Merten stated we received a grant from the Initiative Foundation. This grant is for Pathways for Youth, specifically for youth that are homeless. The purpose of this grant is to assist the homeless youth in achieving a GED and to gain work experience. T. Biery said this program helps us start to engage them and eventually enroll them in our program. The Pathways for Youth flyer was handed out. Industrial Manufacturing Technician (IMT) ? A. Dinkel-VanValkenburg talked about the IMT program and stated students will receive 16 college credits upon completion of this course. Students are finishing up Career Safe and will be starting Tooling U. T. Biery informed the Council that the IMT program will begin again on Monday, November 12 but with Pine Technical and Community College (Pine Tech) instead of St. Cloud Technical and Community College. The teacher will remain the same and the classes are offered at Electrolux. Last week Pine Tech presented each of the students in the class with a college acceptance letter. This was monumental for the students because they are probably the first member in their family to receive a college acceptance letter. From the Floor:

o Tech Robotics Group ? J. Haviland stated the Tech Robotics group is looking for volunteer judges at North Jr. High in St. Cloud on December 1st.

o Educated and Engaged in the Community ? P. Schroeder provided a handout that indicate 70% of children get their career direction from their parents or a significant adult. These posters were made to be given to employers and posted on company bulletin boards to raise awareness about career choices and the important role a parent plays regarding the career paths of their children.

o NASA Program with ISD #742 ? L. Sams announced The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), a national organization, came to visit in October. Johnsons Space Center met with District #742 and a room full of local

representatives, congress people, nonprofit organizations, and many others in efforts to gain support in our area. SME would like to do an industry wide assessment of specific needs and skills that they need future employees to have. At the same time they will make recommendations and partner with various school districts to make a joint plan on how they can get the skills and determine if any skills are missing. SME is the coordinator to get all the schools together. o SME has a partnership with NASA. ISD#742 will be using NASA's real life challenges in their existing programming for students. This event will take place at Apollo High School. o Career Exposure ? L. Sams also stated change is coming to ISD #742 with the new Tech High School opening next year. The idea is to have Career Pathways established within the ISD #742 schools to offer more career exposure to the students. An idea is to have the 9th graders participate in mini career rotations that will last all year. The focus of these rotations will parallel the career wheel. After that the implementation of Pathways will take place. o Gail R. informed the Council that SCRUBS camp will be held June 17-19, 2019. The high school students will be at SCSU and middle school students will be at SCTCC. Suggestions for Presentations ? L. Sams suggested Boy Scouts Explorer Program for Skilled Trades might be a good idea for a presentation. The Boy Scouts are looking for approximately 15-20 youth to register for the skilled trades program. They have partnered with the Horizon Roofing to offer students a chance to experience a career in the skilled trades' fields. Next Youth Council Meeting is 01/08/2019 at 3:00pm at the St. Cloud Workforce Center. A. Dinkel-VanValkenburg thanked everyone for attending the Youth Council meeting!
