School and Country: Istituto Comprensivo L. Pirandello – Pesaro – ITALYKindergarten “Il castello delle meraviglie” – Villagrande di MombaroccioTeacher BRACCI MICHELACOMMUNITY AND HISTORYOur activity is about the festivity of Christmas. Christmas is part of the Italian historical and religious tradition. In order to make children an active part of the local community, every year our school, in collaboration with the local municipality of the town, takes part in the “Mombaroccio Christmas market”. On this occasion our school sets up a stand with the products made by the children and takes part in an exhibition of artisan nativity scenes. Every year the children create a crib with different materials: this year they chose to use plastic bottle caps.Step 1: the class teacher discusses with children on what are the traditions of Christmas in Italy and among those list from the children ( Christmas tree, decorations, Christmas card, traditional food, crib) she asks them which one they would like to represent. Children choose to represent the crib. The teacher asks the children to list the characters of the crib.Step 2: The children together with the teacher decide to stage a living crib with the characters listed. So they begin to prepare some paper accessories for the crib characters (ears for the animals, crowns for the Three Kings, wings for the angel, a star for the comet, etc.) Step 3: the children with the help of the teacher disguise themselves with the paper accessories and some pieces of cloth. Then while the teacher tells the story of the birth of Jesus, the children act. 26396957905754000020000 Step 4: at the end of the dramatization the teacher proposes to the children to prepare a crib for the local exhibition of the town with recycled materials. After thinking about what materials they can use, children decide to use plastic bottle caps because they are very colorful. So the kids start looking for the caps and divide them by color and size (thinking about the characters in the crib they have dramatized: baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, the sheep, the ox and the donkey, the angel, the Three kings, the shepherds, the comet). Step 5: the children with the help of the teacher glue the caps (with the hot glue and the vinyl glue) to form the characters, the grass, the hut and the comet. Step 6: now that everything is ready we can build the crib! Here’s our crib…isn’t it beautiful? We are very proud! ................
