ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY

IN REHABILITATION MEDICINE

- Handbook for Students -

INTRODUCTION

Rehabilitation Science is an interdisciplinary field that focuses on human function and disability.

Basic and applied research from health sciences, social sciences, engineering, and related fields are directed toward:

• Enhancing physical and psychosocial functioning, participation in life situations, and quality of life of people with disabilities

• Informing relevant social and health care policy

We offer a program for advanced research study and original investigation in Rehabilitation Sciences at the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) level.

This program is governed by the general requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy as described by the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM:

The Research Doctorate in Advanced Technology in Rehabilitation Medicine is open to Physicians, Biomedical Engineers, and Physiotherapists.

The program lasts three years and has an international didactic as a particular characteristic. The program takes place in Rome (Italy) and is performed in English.

The didactic is carried out by Physicians, Biomedical Engineers, and Physicists, all of whom are members of prestigious Italian and Foreign Universities, like the University of Sao Paulo Brazil, the University of Texas at San Antonio and The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, USA .

There are facilities to receive foreign graduate students from all countries in order to foster and conform to scientific knowledge and exchange in the field of Rehabilitation.

Guidelines are given for introducing PhD students to innovative tools and technologies in order to be competitive both in Europe and in the World.

The topics treated deal with technological innovations in Rehabilitation Medicine, which are essential for the recovery of people with disability.

It is becoming ever more important to create a link between the scientific and the technological world, involving Rehabilitation as a priority target.

Our mission is to form and develop researchers who will be able to manage such scientific and technological tools.

Our vision is to impact and increase visibility in the field of international research.

BRIEF OUTLINE OF PROGRAM

The following thematic areas will be studied in detail:

Diagnostic Area: Functional MRI; Muscular Evaluation, sEMG, Electrodiagnosis, Motion Analysis, stabilometric and baropodometric evaluation, hardening work, outcome measurements.

Therapeutic Area: Physical therapy, overactivity syndrome treatment; ultrasound guided intrarticular injection; orthosis and prosthetics; occupational therapy.

Assistive Technology Area: Domotics, Industrial Medicine.

GENERAL ADMISSION, REQUIREMENTS AND CRITERIA

A thesis-based Master's degree in rehabilitation sciences, or other related fields of study along with appropriate undergraduate and graduate courses, are normally required for admission. Appropriate coursework will be selected in consultation with the candidate's committee and will depend on the student's background and field of study. All candidates are required to complete an oral comprehensive examination. Following the comprehensive examination, the student will present a formal thesis proposal for approval by the candidate's committee before proceeding to the research which will culminate in a formal thesis defence. The major requirement of the PhD is completion of a research thesis demonstrating ability to conduct significant and original scientific research.

More information will be available at the following website:

CAREERS

The PhD Program in Advanced technology in Rehabilitation Medicine at Tor Vergata University targets students from diverse backgrounds in rehabilitation-related fields

Graduates of the PhD Program in Rehabilitation Science will be prepared as researchers, educators, and leaders in the field of rehabilitation science, who will work in academic institutions, service delivery systems (hospitals, public schools, etc.), government agencies, and the private sector.

These individuals will be prepared to address research, education, service delivery, and policy challenges requiring an interdisciplinary perspective

DECLARATION OF RELATIVE VALUE

In order to continue studies in Italy, the Declaration of Relative Value is required as recognition of a diploma or certificate from any foreign school. The Declaration serves to demonstrate the validity of the diploma or certificate.

The Declaration of Relative Value is issued by the representative Italian Embassy or Consulate of the country or territory in which the academic diploma or certificate was issued. If the applicant is already in Italy, they can apply through the Embassy or by writing directly to the Italian Consulate.

If the legislation of the country or territory that issued the diploma or certificate stipulates that the document must be legalized as a guarantee of its authenticity, the Italian Embassy or Consulate will issue the Declaration of Value only after the diploma or certificate is legalized by the competent authority of that country or territory.

If this rule applies in the country or territory where the diploma or certificate was issued, you must contact the competent authority of that country or territory to obtain the legalization of the diploma or certificate BEFORE you ask the Italian Embassy or Consulate to issue the Declaration.

Alternatively, if the country that issued your diploma or certificate signed the Hague Convention (5 October 1961), your diploma or certificate falls under the guidelines of the "Hague Postilla" (Hague Apostille). The stamp with the “Postilla” should be placed on your document BEFORE you ask the Italian Embassy or Consulate to issue the Declaration.

You can be exempted from the Declaration requirement only if you meet one on the following conditions:

1) the institution that issued the diploma or certificate belongs to one of the countries that have signed the European Convention in Brussels on 25 May 1987 (Belgium, Denmark, France, Ireland, Italy); or

2) you are in possession of a diploma issued by Germany, which as a result of the Italo-German Convention, provides exemption from the legalization of public documents.
