From getting rid of facial moles to pinning back big ears, how bullied children are now resorting to plastic surgery

Being bullied over physical looks, while not new, continues to be a common part of childhood. But children - and their protective parents - are now going to extreme lengths to avoid it altogether.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons the number of children getting cosmetic surgery because of bullying has grown 30per cent in the past decade, with more than 76,000 procedures performed on teenagers in 2011 alone.

Virginia-based surgeon Dr Joe Niamtu told that the most common surgeries he performs on children are pinning back protruding ears and removing facial moles or scars.

While she may be too young to understand why she had her mole removed, her mother insists it was the right decision.

Kendall isn't the only young one who has gone under the knife to avoid potential bullying.

According to Dr Niamtu, parents are increasingly turning to plastic surgery for their young children because 'little kids have no filter.'

He explained that children often say something innocent like, "What's that on your face?" but 'they are also spiteful and they tease,' he says.

As such, a growing number of worried parents are turning to plastic surgery for their bullied children, although not without some negative reactions.

Indeed, some eyebrows were raised when Little Baby Face Foundation - a New York based charity offering free plastic surgeries to children - was launched in 2002.

While the foundation specializes in significant facial deformities like cleft palates, it also deals with lesser problems like protruding ears.

The problem with making cosmetic surgery available to children is that 'We have a bodydysmorphic population,' says Dr Niamtu.

'A lot of young people come in. . . and want brow lifts and face lifts - that's crazy.'

Braces are painful, but we don't hesitate to put them on our children. If my kid's ears stuck out really far, I would have them corrected too provided she wanted it done. If she didn't want it, I wouldn't do it.
