From History of Shelby County, Chadwick, pub. 1887, p367: “Robert’s Chapel in Flatrock Circuit about 3 miles below Flatrock Station and about 20 feet from the line between Shelby and Bartholomew Counties…second oldest Methodist society in Shelby Co. Formed fall, 1822. Among original members, John Ensley and wife.

"John decided to take off on his own and eventually found employment at the Bellefonte Iron Works. Henry Gates was the owner of the Works who had a young daughter. John and Catherine were married in 1792 and around 1806 as new territories opened up, they all moved to Forrest County, Pennsylvania. Henry Gates is buried on a mountainside which is now included in a Boy Scouts of America reservation. Mary Ensley Weinantz.

"Benjamin Ensley had come west with his family settling first in Fayette County, Indiana and then moving in 1820 to Shelby County where they remained the rest of their lives. Some 600A was purchased from the government and 160A of that was in Bartholomew County where Dad (Landa Ensley) owned a farm. John received that part as his inheritance, so he decided to come west about 1826. John was living near Tionesta Creek in Pennsylvania which I suppose was actually not what we consider a creek to be, but a large river. On this creek he built a large flat-boat for their trip to Indiana. From Tionesta Creek they went to the Allegany River to Pittsburgh and then into the Ohio River which brought them to Madison, Indiana. We do not know the exact size of the flat-boat or the length of time it took for the trip. I can just imagine what a wild ride that must have been. On it they brought all their worldly possessions - wagon, horses, cow, feed for livestock, provisions for the family, furniture and seven children ranging in ages of about two to thirteen years. When they reached Madison a spring flood was in progress and they were unable to land the large boat safely. The children were taken ashore in small flat-boats. They wanted their mother to go with them, but she refused to leave the large boat. As John maneuvered the vessel to shore, Catherine, in true pioneer fashion, stood with axe in hand in case the boat capsized, ready to cut the ropes to free the livestock which could then swim to shore. They landed safely, sold their boat for a goodly sum, loaded their possessions in their wagon and hit the trail for Bartholomew County. I have heard Dad (Landa Ensley) say that Catherine made one trip back to Pennsylvania on horseback, along with one of her sons." Mary Ensley Weinantz.

“John Ensley left home as a young man and went to Penn. where he found employment in the Bellefonte Iron Works. Here he met and married Catharine Gates, his employer’s daughter. Later they lived in Venango Co. Pa., where our grandfather was born. They came to Indiana in 1826 on a raft that they had built on Tionesta Creek which emptied into the Allegheny River then by way of the Ohio River to Madison Ind. At Madison they sold the raft for a considerable sum ($2000) and came by wagon to Bartholomew Co. I think John must have lived in the log house that stood south of where Bob now lives, in fact it was nearer the road that goes by Roy Bozell’s. The S.E. quarter of 5-10-6 was the original purchase of Benjamin in 1820. The land on which our grandfather’s house stood was not bought until 1841 from the Weisner heirs (S and E ½ of NE ¼ consisting 25 acres so he must have built the house.”

Mary Helen Jones, a great-great granddaughter of Benjamin Ensley, said that her mother, Sarah Melissa Ensley, told this story: “”That the Ensleys of her branch, as I recall my great-great grandfather and mother came down the Ohio on a flatboat intending to land at Madison. That the river was ‘in freshet’ and they were dubious about making the landing. That my great-great grandmother stood with a hatchet ready to cut loose her old ‘flea-bit’ mare to swim ashore if they could not land and the flatboat capsized. They, of course, did land and they came up through Indiana to the farm in Shelby Co. on which my mother was born in a log cabin, in 1852….Thinking back and remembering things mother mentioned, the Ensleys probably did originate in New York State and then migrated into Penna. and Indiana.”

23 Feb 1892: died Drain, Douglas County, Oregon. (Bible)

Lived Marion County, Indiana; Quincy, Adams County, Illinois, Van Buren County, Iowa. They migrated to Oregon in a covered wagon.

From Mary Weinantz: Charles Drain, husband of Nancy Gates Ensley, was born 18 Dec 1816 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In 1821 he came to Shelby County, Indiana with his parents who both died within six months. Their three sons and a daughter found homes among strangers. Charles lived with a Mr. Mitchell and was later adopted by John Duncan of Marion County. He would not let Charles attend school, so at age sixteen he went to Quincy, Illinois where he learned the trade of plasterer and returned to Shelby County in 1838, marrying in 1839. In 1850 he left his home in Van Buren County, Iowa with fifteen companions for the gold fields of California. In 1851 he returned to Iowa via the Panama Canal. In 1852 he and his family (two sons and one daughter) started to Oregon by wagon train, arriving 20 Sept 1952 where they settled on a farm in Marion County, Oregon ten miles from Albany. Charles farmed there for ten years. In 1854 he was elected to the territorial council and re-elected in 1867. On admission of the territory in to the United States, Charles was elected to the state senate for four years. While a member he was elected president of that body. In 1860 he leased his valuable farm in the Willamette Valley and resigned his seat in the senate. They moved to Douglas County and bought 320 acres to which he later added 1700 acres. In 1871 he donated 60 acres to the Oregon and California Railroad Company and also laid out the town which bears his name. In 1889 Mr. and Mrs. Drain celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with their surviving children - John C., Catherine and Charles Douglas Drain.

I think this was the land that paid for their debts. Melva had a number of cabins that she rented out, mostly to tourists. One day this gang of men came and rented several of the cabins from her. 1971: letter from Mary Weinantz about Nelle's wedding: "I think your parents must have been married at the Mechanic Street address. There was an alcove at one end of the living room where the ceremony took place. It was separated from the living room by wooden grille work - is about the best way I know know to describe it. I do not recall your mother wearing a veil. It wasn't quite that formal. However, I could be mistaken. I was only seven and scared to death in front of strangers. I carried the ring on a satin pillow. They kept cautioning me about being careful to hold the pillow level or the ring might slide off the pin and watch that I didn't stub my toe on the spread rugs as I marched in. I was a nervous wreck when it was all over."

Barbre-Ensley Wedding [29 June 1912]

“Beautiful in appointment and exquisite in every detail was the wedding which took place this morning at the home of Mr. and Mrs. P. B. Ensley on Mechanic street the bride being their daughter, Miss Nelle Ensley, and the bridegroom, Rev. William Thomas Barbre, of Rockville. The ceremony was pronounced at 9 o’clock by the Rev. L. F. Dimmitt, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church in the presence of forty relatives and friends.

The floral settings were very artistic, a dainty color combination of green and white being used in the ceremony room with pretty effect. The bridal altar was arranged in the alcove off the living room and was formed of a background of palms and ferns with trailing vines of smilax and set amid the greenery were stately calla lilies. The archway and chandeliers were entwined with smilax and asparagus ferns the only variation to the general color note being in the vases of pink Killarney roses in the living room.

For the entrance of the bridal party Arthur Mason played the wedding march from Lohengrin, changing the music to Troumeni [sic] for the ceremony. Just before the ceremony Mrs. Clarence C. McCullough sang ‘Annie Laurie’ the bride’s favorite song.

The attendants, Miss Mae A. Ensley, a cousin of the bride was maid of honor, and the Rev. William Wiedrich, pastor of the Christian church at Farmersburg, was the best man. Mary Ensley, another cousin of the bride, was the flower girl and ring bearer, carrying the ring in a French basket of sweet peas.

The bride wore a gown of white panne bridal satin, elaborated with princess lace and orange blossoms and her bouquet was an armful of white Killarney roses tied with white tulle. Miss Mae Ensley’s costume was white marquisette over pink silk and she carried pink roses.

After congratulations refreshments of cream, cake and mints were served in the dining room. Pink and white were chosen for the dining room decorations and the color scheme was carried out in detail. The ices and confections were in heart shape and the favors were tiny wedding bells tied with pink and white ribbons. For the center of the bride’s table there was a high handled French basket filled with pink and white carnations.

Rev. and Mrs. Barbre left this morning for a wedding trip and will attend Bethany Assembly. They will be at home to their friends after September 1 at Rockville, Ind. The traveling suit was a dark blue with hat and accessories to correspond. The wedding gifts were handsome and numerous including cut glass, silver, china and linens.

Miss Ensley is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ensley and is an accomplished young woman. After graduating from the local high school she graduated from DePauw and will receive her master’s degree from Indiana University next spring. For the past few years she has been teacher of German in the high school. She is also a prominent member of the Methodist church and an ardent Sunday school worker. Rev. Barbre is pastor of the First Christian church at Rockville, Ind. He is a graduate of the State Normal and has completed the university course. During the past year he did advanced work at Butler college.

Those who came for the wedding were Mrs. L. B. Humphries, of Rockville, Rev. and Mrs. Frank E. Davison of Indianapolis, Mr. and Mrs. Landy Ensley and daughters Elsie and Mary, of Edinburg, Mrs. Alice Heck, of Shelbyville, Miss Josephine Fitzgibbon, of Mitchell, and Rev. Weidrich, of Farmersburg.

She leaves a devoted husband and an infant son and many relatives and loving friends to mourn her departure. In early life she made a profession of religion, joining the Methodist Episcopal Church at the age of ten years, and remaining faithful until her death. She was born April 27, 1869, and was married August 5, 1888 to Adam Will. She was loved by all who knew her and all testified to her goodness and kind words. She was an earnest worker in the Sabbath school and the tearful eyes and crowded house bore testimony to the high esteem in which she was held by those around her."
