[Pages:2]The Choices in Learning School Board invites any interested parents and community members to apply to serve on the CIL Board of Directors. Currently, the board has five directors. The Choices in Learning Bylaws allow for the board to have up to seven members and must always be an odd number. At this time, two additional individuals may join the board.

Should these positions not be filled at this time, the board will seek additional members as needed during the board meeting held in May, as per the bylaws.

Answers to commonly asked questions about the board and its roles/responsibilities may be found in our bylaws and charter located on the CIL website on the CIL Board of Directors page. The below answers some of these questions:

Who is the Board of Directors? The Board of Directors is the governing body of the school made up of elected and unpaid members.

What is the role of the Board of Directors?

The CIL Board of Directors manages, controls and directs the affairs and property of Choices in Learning. The Board of Directors is responsible for the legal and fiduciary oversight of the charter school. The Board of Directors delegates to the Principal of the charter school and his/her designees, authority and responsibility for the management of the affairs of the charter school, in accordance with written policies and procedures.

Specific duties of the Board of Directors include: Choosing the leadership of the school, reviewing all personnel actions, reviewing and approving the annual budget, ratifying policy decisions, developing strategic long-range plans, and hearing unresolved grievances.

What does the Board of Directors not do? The Board of Directors does not engage in decision-making about day-to-day operations of the school. The Board of Directors employs a Principal to oversee all aspects concerning the general operations of the charter school. The Principal is responsible for day-to-day administrative oversight of the charter school.

What is required of Board members? Elected board members attend all scheduled and special board meetings. Currently, scheduled board meetings occur quarterly, and additional meetings are scheduled as needed. Board meetings generally occur in the evening, except for the May board meeting, which is generally scheduled during the day due to length. All board members must also be fingerprinted and complete required governance training. Additionally, board members are expected to abide by all the Bylaws, CIL Charter duties, and Florida Non-Profit Corporation Act and comply with all Florida Sunshine State Laws.

How does one join the board? Interested individuals are encouraged to attend all board meetings to become better acquainted with the board's roles and responsibilities. When positions open on the Board, interested individuals should complete the board application and plan to attend a future board meeting during which a vote will be held. The Board will consider all candidates and select by majority vote new members according to their skills, knowledge and expertise to assist the school in achieving its mission.
