PROFILE

Deriving its name in the late 1800's due to its similarities to the sunny peninsula of Naples, Italy, the city of Naples, Florida quickly gained a reputation as a premier winter resort. Originally inhabited by the Caloosa Indians, the beaches and surrounding area of Naples was later home to its first settlers, Roger Gordon and Joe Wiggins, who arrived in the late 1860's. To this day a river and two inlets bear their names.

In 1887 much of the town of Naples was purchased by a group of wealthy Kentuckians. One of the first improvements they made was to build a pier 600 feet into the Gulf of Mexico, with an unusual "T" shape that allowed large ships to dock easily. Although this pier has been destroyed and rebuilt three times, this "T" shape can still be seen today, and the pier has developed into one of Naples' most notable points of interest.

Into the 1900's, Naples continued to build its reputation as a beachside resort for the affluent. Various celebrities such as Thomas Edison, Harvey Firestone, Greta Garbo and Gary Cooper were known to vacation here.

In 1911, Barron Collier, a wealthy businessman, visited nearby Useppa Island and was so enamored with the area that he purchased over a million acres of swampland, including most of Naples. Believing that Naples could potentially experience a boom similar to that being experienced on the east coast in the 1920's, Barron Collier spent over $1 million of his own money to construct the Tamiami Trail, which opened in 1926 as the only paved highway linking the state's two largest cities ? Tampa and Miami, hence, the name: Tamiami.

Although Barron Collier never lived to see it, by the mid to late 20th century, development began to thrive and Naples became the city it is today. Collier County today is the largest county east of the Mississippi River, containing approximately 2,000 square miles of land area, with Naples as its crown jewel.

Its pleasant subtropical climate, where temperatures average 75 degrees, has allowed Naples to become a prominent vacation spot with mild, nearly rain-free winters. In addition to beautiful weather, Naples offers a broad spectrum of cultural diversions including opera, ballet, comedy, musical entertainment, art galleries, sculpture gardens, shops and museums, as well as special attractions such as downtown trolley tours. Naples is proud to be the home of the Philharmonic Center of the Arts, the Gulf Coast home of the Miami Ballet, and the Naples Players Playhouse. The city hosts internationally renowned performers and museum quality touring exhibits throughout the year. The Naples dining experience is world-famous and affords endless choices. Quaint antique and specialty shops are accessible and plentiful in Naples.

Along with the population growth in recent years, particularly among younger couples and families, came the development of many new schools, and the opportunities for a top-notch education. Whether attending the highly acclaimed Collier County school system, or the extensive array of private schools in the area, children can be assured of a quality education.
