HOW TO GET A TEACHER PAGE TO APPEAR

LINKING MULTIPLE TEACHER PAGES

Scenario: Sue Johnson teaches Science at the Elementary and the Middle School. The Teacher Page she created is under the Elementary School and it shows up on the Faculty list. Ms. Johnson also wants to be represented on the Middle School Faculty section.

With Manager and Editor privileges, you can make this happen, but since you can’t have two Teacher Pages, or put a teacher page in more than one section, the answer is to create an article with a link to her Elementary School Faculty page that puts her name on the Middle School Faculty list. Then, with a little bit of magic (HTML) we can make it appear as though there is a Teacher Page on each of two school sites.

Step 1: As manager, add a new section for Sue Johnson under the Middle School

Example: Middle School|Faculty>>Johnson, Sue

Step 2: As Editor or Chief Editor (not as the teacher) create an article

Headline: Johnson, Sue

Tagline: Could relate to the Middle School or the subject she teaches or have nothing in it.

Step 3: Go to Ms. Johnson’s Teacher Page article in the Elementary Faculty section and click on it.

• Once in the article, copy the URL from the address line (from /vnews to the right)

Example: /vnews/display.v/SEC/Elementary%20School%7CFaculty%3E%3ESue%20Johnson or /vnews/display.v/ART/4295ef58845f1

Step 4: Article Content:

• Go to Articles on the SOCS toolbar and click on Johnson, Sue if you see the article on the list (this creates the hyperlink to her article)

• If you do not see the article on the list, create a hyperlink to the article

Step 5: Now the “magic. You are going to paste and edit some HTML code in the article so that when you click on Ms. Johnson’s name on the Middle School Faculty list it will go directly to her page located on the Elementary site (if you do not have pop-ups blocked). If the viewer’s pop-ups are blocked, it will take them to the article with the link to her page.

Follow these few easy steps:

1. Go to “View” on the toolbar and choose “HTML View”

2. Copy and paste the following script” EXACTLY as is

    window.open("insert URL here",

      "_blank",

      "toolbar=yes,location=yes,directories=yes,status=yes,menubar=yes,scrollbars=yes,copyhistory=yes,resizable=yes");

3. Copy the URL from the hyperlink you created

Example: /vnews/display.v/SEC/Elementary%20School%7CFaculty%3E%3ESue%20Johnson

4. Paste it into the HTML code area “insert URL here”

5. Go back to “View” on the toolbar and change it back to “Design View”

6. You will see a Script tag has been inserted in your article.

7. Test your “shortcut” in the preview to ensure it does what you want it to.

8. Submit article

RESULT

You now have the teacher represented in both sections, with both basically having the same appearance. You can use the same process to create a presence for teachers in other schools/sections. For instance, your School Counselor can have a presence in all the schools they serve in your school district.
