Writing - Students will participate in the writing process to produce clear and coherent writing that is appropriate to the task, purpose, and audience. Grammar - Students will demonstrate Standard English grammar while writing and speaking.Language - Students will acquire and accurately use general academic vocabulary and literary terminology.Speaking and Listening - Students will come prepared to initiate and collaborate in a range of discussions. GRADING: Formative and summative are the two types of grading that are used. Both are necessary to demonstrate mastery of the standards.Formative assessments are intended to track progress toward mastery of the standards. Examples include: Homework, writing processes, reading logs (prior to collection), note taking, guided questions, etc.Summative assessments will carry the weight of the grade. Examples include: Submitted reading logs, quizzes, tests, finals, final writing pieces, proficiency tests, digital projects, etc.Grading scale for Jeffersontown High School is as follows:A90-100B80-89C75-79D70-74U69 and belowWhat to Expect?For Reading:Students will read an independent reading book of their choice in class each day. Books may be brought from home, the library, or checked out from my classroom library.Students are given a reading log on the first day of the week. Each day, there is a focus question based on the reading standard. These logs are formatively assessed the following day and students are provided feedback. Students can then correct any responses on which they did not receive full credit PRIOR to turning it in. The logs will be collected the first day of the following week and given a summative score. In addition, we will be reading various whole class readings. These will be evaluated through both formative and summative assessments. Writing pieces will be evaluated through both formative and summative assessments. For Grammar:Students will be provided with bi-weekly grammar practices, which will be assessed formatively.Grammar summative assessments will include bi-weekly quizzes, proficiency tests, and writing pieces.For Language:Students will develop and increase their vocabulary skills through the use of literary terms, SAT/ACT words, and Greek and Latin roots.Practice (formative assessment) will be given on the first day of the week and due two days later. Weekly quizzes (summative assessments) will be given on the last day of the week. Example for a normal 5 day week – Roots will be presented on Monday, practice due on Wednesday, and a quiz given on Friday.For Speaking and Listening:Students will be given various opportunities to demonstrate these skills through class discussions, small group work, and presentations. CLASS RULES/EXPECTATIONS:BE PREPARED-Be in dress code.Be in your seat with supplies/assignment ready.Bring your binder and IR book each plete all assignments on time.BE ENGAGED-Pay attention!Stay awake and alert at all times.NO ELECTRONICS (including IPODS, IPADS, Cell phones, etc.) UNLESS instructed by the teacher to use for educational purposes only (such appropriate purposes include Independent reading, researching literary elements, whole class novels, Greek or Latin root assistance, etc.)RESPECT OTHERS- This includes having a positive attitude towards the teacher, peers, visitors, and respecting the classroom furniture and materials.Respect the room-Keep it clean. -Return all materials to their areas.-Clean up any/all trash, spills, etc.-Remember, drinks and snacks are a privilege; not a right. This privilege can be taken away if abused. MAKE UP WORK: Students are responsible for picking up their makeup work from the makeup bin located in the back of the class. In order to make up tests or quizzes, students must schedule a time with Mrs. Brinley. REMEDIATION: Extended learning opportunities are available on Wednesdays and Thursdays after school unless otherwise stated by Mrs. Brinley. Parents or guardians must complete permission slips for the year in order for a student to stay. The activity bus is available for transportation home after remediation sessions on Wednesdays and Thursdays.Remediation is not a crutch for students to make up work not done in class. It is intended for students who need extra help in mastering the standards or enrichment for those who have already mastered them. In order for students to receive credit for attending remediation, they must have the following:Completed practice for the standard Corrected practice, if feedback from Mrs. Brinley indicated to do soTurned in permission slips from parent/guardian (one permission slip for the entire year)Arranged for transportation after the session (students must sign up for the Activity Bus in the Youth Service Center each week they need to ride it)Grades are recorded on infinite campus and can be accessed via parent portal or student portal.
