ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE ACROSS THE DISTRICT

Forty-two Jeffco schools received academic awards from the Colorado Department of Education (CDE), with some Jeffco schools walking away with double honors. Edgewater Elementary School is a 2014 Centers of Excellence Award school. The award recognizes schools that demonstrate the highest sustained rates of student longitudinal growth as measured by the Colorado Growth Model — among schools that have at least 75 percent at-risk students. "This award is a true representation of how intentional we are when working with students to meet their academic and social needs," said Edgewater Principal Celeste Sultze. The John Irwin Schools of Excellence Award goes to schools with excellent academic achievement on the three-year school performance framework. There are 26 Jeffco schools that exceeded expectations on the academic achievement indicator. See the list of Jeffco 2014 John Irwin recipients here. The Governor's Distinguished Improvement Award was awarded to 23 Jeffco schools that demonstrated excellent student growth. These schools exceeded expectations related to academic growth gaps. See the list of Jeffco 2014 Governor's award recipients here.

LAKEWOOD TEACHER AIMS HIGH

Lakewood High School teacher Sara Shackett is being recognized for her excellence in the classroom. She is the 2014 Outstanding Secondary Social Studies Teacher of the Year named by the National Council of Social Studies Teachers. Shackett received her award at the organization's recent annual conference held in Boston. Shackett has been a Jeffco teacher since 2001 and currently teaches AP and IB Economics, as well as Honors Government and Economics.

JEFFCO SCHOOLS MAKES THE HONOR ROLL

The College Board has placed Jeffco Schools on its honor roll. The Fifth Annual Advanced Placement District Honor Roll recognizes Jeffco for increasing access to Advanced Placement (AP) course work while, simultaneously maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning scores of three or higher on AP exams. Jeffco is one of 547 school districts in the U.S and Canada named to the list. Find the complete Fifth Annual AP District Honor Roll.

ALAMEDA OFFERS PATHWAY TO MEDICAL CAREERS

Alameda International High School has created a unique career pathway suited just to their students.

The Bilingual Medical Terminology class is part of the school's International Baccalaureate Career Related Certificate Program — the goal is to prepare Alameda students for careers in health. The program started four years ago and has tripled its enrollment, inspiring other high schools to consider starting their own program. Some students will qualify for entry-level medical jobs right after graduation, others will use this as a stepping stone for higher-med learning. Demand for people well-versed in bilingual medical speak is high. The class gives students the opportunity to practice bilingual techniques through sports performance enhancement, including building goals for athletes to follow. RYAN ELEMENTARY GRANDPARENTS TALK HISTORY

Ryan Elementary School recently hosted a Grandparents Day at their school that invited families to watch student performances and take pictures of their grandkids. Staff also tied the day into the social studies unit on history. Grandparents talked to students about how things have changed over the years and completed history lessons with them. They talked about how schools and transportation are different, even how the clothes we wear have changed. "The history that they are learning about and what's different between them and their grandparents and how we grew up and relating it to what they're experiencing now is neat," said a Ryan grandparent. "To help foster those conversations, it's fabulous." Watch the JPS-TV YouTube video.
