Introduction to Computer Assisted Language Learning Spring 2005

By using games that your students are already familiar with, explaining the rules will be quick, simple and entirely in the target language. From there your students will have fun while reviewing vocabulary or applying grammatical concepts either in pairs in the Language Lab or in teams in the classroom.

The resources on this sheet were selected to provide instructors with limited a limited knowledge of PowerPoint the resources to create PowerPoint games for their classroom. Most of the templates are ready to use and only need the instructor’s specific content to be input. Advanced users will find many ways to enhance these templates by inserting graphics, sound files, adjusting timing of the frames, etc.

All of the selections below are, in my opinion, well-designed and easy to use. However, if you find a game that you don’t like or want to improve you can simply do an online search for “PowerPoint” and “Jeopardy” to either find a better version or ideas for how you can design your own better version. If you find something you like, download it immediately because it might not be available tomorrow! Many of the templates that incorporate copyrighted images should not be available on the Web. I have found that several of the templates I’ve downloaded in the past have posted announcements that the file is no longer available due to copyright issues. All of the links provided on this sheet are active as of September 28, 2005.

GAME TEMPLATES

Here you’ll find the variation of “Jeopardy” that I based my game on. Due to copyright laws, I’m not able to publish the game on the Web. However if you’d like a copy for your own use, feel free to email me. I’ve created both a version for use in the Spanish classroom as well as a version for use in an ESL/EFL setting.



This site has well-designed templates for “Hollywood Squares” and “Who Wants to be a Millionaire”. The other games and templates they offer aren’t quite as good as others available online.



Here you’ll find a template for “The Weakest Link”. This one will probably not be available for very long as it uses copyrighted images from the show. If you want it, get it soon!



There are lots of PowerPoint presentations on this page for Spanish teachers. However, most of them are straightforward grammar instruction. The “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” cultural introduction is a lot of fun for warming students up the first few days of class.



Although not done in PowerPoint, you can quickly and easily generate “Bingo” cards for review activities in the classroom. This site offers numbers, letters, time, holiday and lots of other images to choose from for your Bingo cards.
