Prior Knowledge: Previous lesson on color, shape, texture and flexibility. students should understand between heavy and light.

Activity 1. Engage

Description of Activities and Setting

Students will get the students engaged by reading a book Float or Sink: scholastic. The teacher will tell the students that we are going to test object to see if they float or sink just like the book did. We will also test the size of objects. ( the ELL will have headphones that reads the story to him in spanish after the teacher reads each page in english. for his understand of english and also understanding of the book in spanish.) PID

At each table there will be different centers to test size and weight.The students will be carrying their journal to every station. To fill in a graphic organizer that has been given to them.

Weight: Center 1 There will be different object at the table, Quarter, sponge, toy boat, and a shell. The students will look/ feel each object. Based on the weight of the object, the students will be able to guess if it will sink or float. They will write in their journal under float or sink. Once guessing has occurred, they will be able to put the objects in water to test the theories.

Center 2 a couple scales will be at the table where students will be able to see which objects weigh less, same or more heavier. They will place one object on one side of the scale and the other object on the other side and compare. While recording in their notebook.

Size: Center 1 Students will compare the size of the sponge, toy boat, quarter and shell at a separate table. They will line them all up from biggest to smallest and record a drawing in their notebook.

( Make sure all students understand what they are suppose to do)CFU (the ELL will have the spanish translation in his notebook along with the english to accommodate for his understanding.) PID

The students will return back to their desks and communicate with the students at their table to see what objects they thought would sink or float and talk about the sizes of the objects. Compare each others recordings. The students will be able to listen to what their classmates estimated as well as their own.

As a class, a computer game that will be shown on a screen for the whole class to see, will be played to help pack a moving truck by packing the lighter things first

The students will have a homework assignment to go around their home or outside and draw 2 small things, 2 big things, 2 heavy things, and 2 light things. A worksheet will be provided with these titles so students do not get confused.

Targeted Students Modifications/Accommodations ELL Teacher has modified the students notes to fit spanish for the child so he understands. But also has english written underneath each word, so the student can also see what it looks like in english.
