Praying Like Jesus Prayed: with Power & Authority

SPIRIT –FILLED, SPIRIT-EMPOWERED

➢ Lk 3: 21-22

o John – baptism of repentance and cleansing

o Jesus determined to be baptized. WHY?

▪ Mt 3:13, “Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, ‘I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?’ But Jesus answered him, ‘Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.’” …. “Do it. God’s work, putting things right all these centuries, is coming together right now in this baptism.” (The Message)

▪ Modelling for us the forgiveness of sin/cleansing, yet Jesus is without sin

➢ Jesus baptized with water and the Spirit!

o Water symbolic of cleansing (from sin)

o Spirit is about empowerment for ministry

▪ No room for more Spirit in Jesus’ divine nature

▪ Plenty of room for Spirit in Jesus’ human nature

o Jesus’ public ministry begins, jump started by in-filling of Holy Spirit

➢ Jesus is now the Christ …. “The Anointed One”

▪ Lk 4:1; 4:14; 4:16-18

➢ Jesus’ public ministry now begins

JESUS’ AUTHORITY

➢ “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given me.” Mt 28:18

o Authority on earth to forgive sins (Mk 2:10)

o Authority to drive out demons (Mk 3:15)

➢ Jesus’ power and authority both at work in Prayer of Command

o To heal

o To cast out demons

o To forgive sins

PRAYER OF COMMAND (see new handout!)

Stories of Spirit leading God’s people to pray with Jesus’ power and authority.

• Josh Acton at Healing Winds Conference, 2014

• healing service in Purulia, India, 2014 – Jesus moved me from a place of fear and doubt to a place of trust and boldness

o “So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new.”

o We are not given a spirit of fear or timidity, but of power and love and self-discipline!

• Heart of Wholeness Conference, 2015

• Region 7 Healing Conference, Church of the Holy Spirit – Las Vegas, NV

Jesus gives us the same power and authority for ministry ….for healing prayer

o Mt 3:11b, “He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” (baptize = “to drench”)

o Mk 10:1, “Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness.”

o Lk 9:1, “Then Jesus called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases.”

o Lk 10:1, 17, “The Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead ….and they returned with joy, saying, ‘Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us.’”

o Jn 15: 15b, “….but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my father.”

➢ Are we willing to pray with the power and authority that Jesus gives us?

o Mt 16: 19b, “….and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

o “For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you …..; for God gave us not a spirit of fearfulness; but of power and love and discipline.” 2 Tim 1:6b, 7
