DOCTORS' NOTES

A PARTNERSHIP

(RE) WRITING THE FUTURE

Hackensack Meridian Health is pleased to announce a new strategic partnership with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center that will optimize clinical cancer care delivery, and enhance research and discovery in New Jersey and beyond -- bringing us one step closer to finding a cure. Simply put, we will rewrite the way cancer care will be provided in the future, building hope in our communities unlike ever before.

This is a time of unprecedented change in cancer medicine. The Memorial Sloan Kettering?Hackensack Meridian Health partnership brings together two world-renowned organizations that share a single goal: finding more cures for cancer faster, while ensuring that everyone has access to the highest-quality cancer care when and where they need it, both today and in the future. This partnership is bigger than New Jersey. The standard of care that we develop together will be implemented at all Hackensack Meridian Health and Memorial Sloan Kettering sites alike, but the sheer size and scope of what we do will impact cancer care everywhere.

Driving the collaboration is a shared commitment to the highest-quality cancer care and improving outcomes and value, which will allow the two organizations to reduce the burden that cancer places on patients and families. The partnership also supports Vice President Biden's Cancer Moonshot initiative, which called for unprecedented cooperation among leading cancer centers to make more therapies available to more patients, while also improving the ability to prevent cancer and detect it at an early stage.

Each organization's existing sites of care ? including Hackensack Meridian Health's cancer care locations, the John Theurer Cancer Center at HackensackUMC in Hackensack and Memorial Sloan Kettering's locations in Basking Ridge, Middletown, and Montvale (opening in 2018) ? will be part of the Memorial Sloan Kettering ? Hackensack Meridian Health partnership, but independently owned and managed. The initial stages of the Memorial Sloan Kettering ? Hackensack Meridian Health partnership will involve developing joint standards of care at these existing sites to optimize clinical outcomes for every patient, as well as setting clinical research priorities. Eventually, the two organizations will create a formal joint venture to own and operate new ambulatory care centers in areas of New Jersey they do not yet serve.

Physicians employed by Memorial Sloan Kettering and Hackensack Meridian Health -- including the Hackensack Division of Regional Cancer Care Associates and physicians who participate in Hackensack Meridian Health's clinically-integrated network -- will continue to care for patients at their respective sites.

The partnership will be overseen by an Operating Board made up of representatives from each organization. That board will function with the advice of a formal clinical council, led by internationally-recognized cancer subtype experts from Memorial Sloan Kettering and Hackensack Meridian Health, as well as a formal executive advisory group comprised of institutional leaders in key areas.

This is a groundbreaking partnership. Our combined and unparalleled clinical experience, along with our focus on big data platforms, next-generation analytics and precision medicine, will lead to the best possible outcomes for our patients. Together, we will develop and implement standardized care management and research protocols for all cancer patients receiving care at Memorial Sloan Kettering and Hackensack Meridian Health sites.

Today, Memorial Sloan Kettering and Hackensack Meridian Health treat one in five New Jersey residents who are diagnosed with cancer. Combined, we will annually serve the most patients with cancer in the region and many of our programs are among the largest and most respected in the country. There is no doubt that harnessing our organizations' expertise in precision medicine, immunotherapy, cell-based therapies, genetic sequencing and testing, and next-generation analytics will lead to the best possible outcomes.

JFK Health and Hackensack Meridian Health Sign Letter of Intent to Explore an Affiliation

A message from John K. Lloyd, FACHE, and Robert C. Garrett, FACHE, co-CEOs of Hackensack Meridian Health:

We are pleased to announce JFK Health and Hackensack Meridian Health have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to explore an affiliation. This announcement comes after an extensive process that considered multiple factors that would strengthen JFK Health and further its mission to keep the community healthy.

JFK Health has been in discussions with several New Jersey-based health care systems who responded to its Request For Information. The emphasis was to explore how an affiliation with each system would strengthen JFK Health and position them for continued success in a rapidly changing health care environment that stresses the efficient delivery of care. JFK looked closely at how an affiliation with each system would align with its clinical services, increase access for patients and their families, and further support population health initiatives.

JFK Health and Hackensack Meridian Health share a culture and vision for the future of health care that reinforces JFK Health's role as a trusted provider. Together, we will offer residents and physicians more choices for accessing both primary and secondary care as well as tertiary services.

In a rapidly changing health care environment, through an affiliation with a successful and quality focused system, JFK Health can strategically make investments in new programs, services and technology to keep pace with the advanced health needs of our communities.

The proposed affiliation complements JFK's successful history of working together with Hackensack Meridian Health. Our organizations' common values of putting patients first and focusing on community needs will be enhanced through additional care coordination and clinical program development.

With a signed LOI, both parties will enter a due diligence period wherein each party will evaluate the structure, operations and finances of one another. We anticipate that a definitive agreement for the proposed transaction will be signed sometime early in the New Year. We will keep you informed as this process progresses.

Hackensack Meridian Health has a lot to be proud of ? and it starts with each and every one of you. Thank you for your continued commitment and dedication to our patients and their loved ones. Our compassionate and high quality care resonates throughout New Jersey and beyond.

We are changing the state of health care.

Online Physician Reviews and Ratings Launch

New Opportunity for Legacy Meridian Health Affiliated Physicians Coming Soon!

In our continued commitment to high reliability and transparency, Hackensack Meridian Health began working with National Research Corporation to convert our Meridian Medical Group (MMG) and other contracted physician groups' Press Ganey data for the nine CG-CAHPS patient experience questions into 5-star ratings. We are proud to announce that you boast an average rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars. Recently, we began publicly sharing these great ratings and reviews incorporating them into the profile pages in our online physician directory. These physicians are among the nation's few and the first physician group in New Jersey to provide 5-star ratings and reviews online.

In an effort to make this opportunity available to all of our Legacy Meridian Health affiliated physicians, NRC has agreed to extend our bulk pricing to our affiliated physicians on a subscription basis. NRC will survey your patients using a short, physician-focused questionnaire delivered via email or text. The question results will be converted to star ratings, the comments will be reviewed for unpublishable content, and then both pieces will be published on Hackensack Meridian's provider directory. Open enrollment is is now open until March 31, 2017. Earning the trust of today's internet consumers is paramount to providing an exceptional patient experience. Leading ratings and reviews sites, such as RateMDs and Yelp, already allow for physician reviews, but these reviews are unverified, use inconsistent methodology, and have variant standard criteria. Bringing accurate, responsible patient ratings data to the internet not only helps patients in their provider searches, but gives you a platform for marketing the great care you provide every day. We hope you find this program advantageous.

Affiliated physicians will be receiving information soon on upcoming webinars and meetings to learn more about how to participate in this great opportunity. Should you have additional questions, feel free to contact Lynette Davis, Marketing director, at lynette.davis@ or 848-888-4526.

The Epic Team is Progressing Through Its Adoption Phase

The Epic team is now fully engulfed in its Adoption phase of the implementation project. Throughout Adoption, groups of IT and operational team members ? including physicians ? are meeting to view workflow demonstrations and ideally reaching final decisions on how those workflows look and function. The goal is to ensure the system being put into place is the best one possible for the entire Network. Once these necessary decisions are made, the IT team can work to finish its build process.

The tasks being accomplished throughout Adoption all help feed into the broader project timelines. There are two timelines the team is working against ? one for ambulatory and another for acute. For ambulatory, the team has recently established a new project timeline for its ambulatory facilities. The "Big Bang" go-live will call for ambulatory locations to go live with Epic on November 4, 2017. On the Acute timeline, Raritan Bay will go live with Epic in early April of 2018. All remaining Legacy Meridian hospitals will then go live in early October of 2018.

Geisinger Health Plan and Hackensack Meridian Health End Collaboration

Geisinger Health Plan and Hackensack Meridian Health have ended their four-year collaboration and will not be offering Geisinger Gold in New Jersey for 2017. Even though this partnership is ending, Hackensack Meridian Health will remain in Geisinger Health Plan's network of participating hospitals and providers in Monmouth and Ocean counties.

We appreciate our physician's support of this plan over the past four years and realize this will directly impact many of our physicians in Monmouth and Ocean counties and their Geisinger Gold patients. Please visit the Meridian Health Physician Extranet to view frequently asked questions.

Cancer Care Projects Hitting Major Milestones

It was a busy year with multiple milestones being achieved in the Building Hope cancer expansion projects! In September, Jersey Shore University Medical Center held a topping of the steel event to mark the placement of the last steel beam at the top of the new HOPE Tower. Soon the walls will begin to take shape and elevate the project to a new level. The new parking garage will open soon, boasting 1,583 new parking spots for team members, residents, and students.

September also marked the official opening of Southern Ocean Medical Center's new cancer care center. Team members, physicians and community members took tremendous pride during the grand opening and tours, and were in awe of the beautiful new setting where compassionate and expert cancer care is delivered. The final piece of the project is to replace the linear accelerator with TrueBeam technology. This took place in December, and will be up and running for radiation treatments by April 2017. Patients from the Manahawkin area will temporarily receive their radiation treatment at Ocean Medical Center during the installation of the new equipment.

Riverview Medical Center opened its new cancer care center in October. Construction for the 29,000-square-foot expansion project began in July 2015 and includes a combination of advanced technological capabilities, a multidisciplinary cancer program, physician offices, and enhanced infusion services in a tranquil and uplifting environment, all designed with the patients' needs in mind. Included in the project are two TrueBeamTM linear accelerators, the most advanced technology available in the state of New Jersey, 20 infusion bays, physician practices, private inpatient rooms, and a multidisciplinary approach to care.

Ocean Medical Center is now treating patients in its new cancer care center. The new TrueBeam linear accelerator, multidisciplinary care space and infusion center are now housed together in a peaceful setting for patients and their families. Final components of the project include renovations to the old infusion space and creating a new main entrance to the cancer center. These final components should be completed by early 2017.

Construction Begins for New Third Floor Patient Care Unit

When building the new Emergency Department three years ago, shell space was created on the second and third floors above the ED, with the vision of having the framework in place to anticipate future expansion. Well, it didn't take long for the demand to catch up and approvals secured to build out the third floor shell into a new inpatient care unit. Construction began in early October, and will take about 10 months to complete.

In the coming months, construction will take place outdoors, as equipment is run in the overhang ceilings on the pedestrian and ambulance sides of the ED. Work will also take place in the ceiling of the new ED lobby. Physicians and team members should be particularly aware of traffic flow around the campus. Only ambulances and delivery trucks will be permitted on the south side of the campus (where the ED ambulance entrance is located). All other vehicles should use the parking garage side to navigate the campus.

Once the project is complete in September 2017, a 36-bed, private-room inpatient unit will be available for elective procedure patients. This will truly be one of the most innovative, patient-centric patient units in the region.

Robotic Surgery Program Reaches 500th Case Milestone

Surgeons at Ocean Medical Center marked the milestone of performing more than 500 cases with the da Vinci Robotic Surgery System. Reaching this tremendous accomplishment demonstrates the team's determination to deliver superior patient care and a level of expertise not available through all robotic programs in NJ. Specialists in urologic, gynecologic, colorectal, general and thoracic surgery perform minimally invasive robotic procedures at Ocean Medical Center.
