Hangzhou Education Workshop (1-3 September 2006)

BIRDLIFE/HKBWS CHINA PROGRAMME

Education Workshop for Trainers of Bird Watching Societies in China

(25 to 27 August and 1 to 3 September 2006)

Report of the Training Workshops

Hangzhou Education Workshop (1-3 September 2006)

This workshop was:

Organized by: Hong Kong BWS and Zhejiang Wild Bird Society (ZJWBS)

Funded by: Darwin Initiative

Supported by: BirdLife International, Shenzhen BWS

A total of 22 people coming from BWSs in Beijing University (1 person), Beijing (1), Fujian (3), Xibopo (1), Jiangsu (2), Jiangxi (1), Shanghai Chongming Dongtan Nature Reserve (1), Shanghai Jiuduansha Nature Reserve (2), Shanghai (4), Shenzhen (2), Wenzhou (1), Wuhan (2) and Xiamen (3) participated in the workshop. 15 helpers from ZJWBS also attended the workshop. Contact information of participants is given in Appendix 1.Trainers were the same as those in the Kunming Education Workshop.

Day 0 – 31 August 2006

Dr Cheung, Simba, Samson and Fion arrived at the Jijin Hotel in the afternoon. Mr Fan Zhongyong and Ms Ma Lei helped in the reception of participants. Ms Dong Jiangtian and Barrie also arrived later. At night, ZJWBS held a welcome dinner.

Day 1 -1 September 2006

Before the morning session started, ZJWBS held a small opening ceremony and chairman of the ZJWBS Mr Chen Shuihua gave a speech about the development of bird-watching events and bird-watching societies in China. Then we had a group photo taken in front of the hotel (shown below).

Morning session

1) The ice-breaking games “Why do we need wetlands” and “Sparrowhawk game” were played. Although the participants liked the games (Fig. 1), it seems that they did not enjoy the game as much as those participants in Kunming.

2) After that, a brain-storming session was held. Questions asked in this session were: “Why do people become interested in birds?”, “How do people become interested in watching birds?” and “How do they learn about birds?”.

Fig. 1 Participants played the game happily.

Afternoon session

1) Barrie gave a presentation on the topic “Reaching young people and families” (Appendix 3).

2) Fion talked about “The development of Crested Bulbul Club of Hong Kong Bird Watching Society” (Appendix 8).

3) Case study sharing: “How the Shenzhen BWS carried out environmental education at school” by Ms Dong Jiangtian (Appendix 4).

Night session

A sharing session was held in which each bird-watching society gave a short introduction of their own society and also talked about their experience in holding activities.

1. For Fujian BWS, there is no office but there are about 20 volunteers. Bird-watching activity is held every month. Some university students have helped in doing bird surveys in the city for three years. Fujian BWS also carried out bird surveys in nature reserves.

2. Xibopo BWS was established in 2004. They helped the Forestry Department to do bird survey during the outbreak of bird flu. However, their organization is quite loose because every core member has his/her own job to do.

3. Members of Jiangsu BWS are usually university students and postgraduate students. Since there are many wetland birds in Jiangsu, the problem of trapping birds by nets is quite serious and they would like to do a complete survey on the number of bird species and their abundance in Jiangsu in 1-3 years. They think that having no full-time staff is a big problem.

4. The major problem that Jiangxi BWS is facing is everyone does his/her own job and they cannot work together (一盤散沙).

5. The total area of Chongming Dongtan Nature Reserve is 241.5 km2. They started flagging birds in 2002 and in last year waterbird survey, totally 5800 birds were recorded. Besides doing surveys, they also held talks and exhibitions at school. What they wanted to do now is to build some facilities (e.g. visitor centres) in the reserve because at present, visitors can only walk around the reserve.

6. The Jiuduansha Nature Reserve, which is 490 km2 large, was designated as a national nature reserve in 6th March 2000.

7. Pioneers of Shanghai BWS were mainly from the East China Normal University (華東師範大學). They did not hold many activities before but now they recognized the importance of holding activities for the development of BWS so now they put more effort on promotion by organizing talks, exhibitions, birdwatching races and so on.

Day 2 – 2nd September 2006

Morning session

1) Samson talked about how birdwatching activities can be used as a kind of environmental education (Appendix 5).

2) The games “Owl and mouse” (Fig. 2) and “Why do we need trees” were played.

3) Case study sharing: Interesting indoor activities related to birds held by the Conservancy Association (Appendix 6).

4) “Swallow migration game” and “Food chain game” (Fig. 3) were played.

5) Simba talked about BirdLife International and China Bird Festival (Appendix 7).

Fig. 2 Owl (left) and mouse (right).

Fig. 3 Participants were playing the “Food chain game”.

Afternoon session

1) Sharing session for BWSs to talk about their proposed activities which will be held in the China Bird Festival.

2) “Wader migration game” was played.

3) Samson talked about the technique for holding outdoor activities with a case study sharing (Appendix 9).

4) Barrie has also shared some cases of RSPB.

5) A briefing about the outing activity which was held next day was given.

Night session

1) Dividing participants into 4 groups for the outing session and an introduction of common bird species seen in the West Lake was given by the ZJWBS.

2) Simba talked about IBAs.

3) Photo sharing session for BWSs. However, this one was not as good as the one in Kunming because it seemed to be an activity for members of ZJWBS (because ZJWBS is dominated by photographers).

Day 3 – 3 September 2006

Morning session

After breakfast, we got on a bus to go to the West Lake for the outing session. Since the driver did not know that the planned route was closed in the early morning, we had to go there by another way and we were about half-hour late than expected (arriving at 8:30am) as a result. In this outing session, each group got a birding point and they had to attract visitors in the West Lake to come and see birds through their telescopes. At first, some participants just wanted to watch birds on their own but then when some visitors came, participants introduced them about the birds and taught them how to use the telescope (Fig. 4 & 7). This outing format was different from the one in Kunming and it seemed that this one was better because the participants could really have a chance to approach the public and applied what they have learnt during the lectures.

Fig. 4 Duan Hui from the Jiangsu BWS is introducing birds to a child.

Fig. 5 Yang Jin from the Fujian BWS was teaching the father and the child how to use the telescope. The father was excited when he could see the bird (it is a Night Heron) and asked his son to have a look at once.

Fig. 6 Many visitors were interested in birdwatching.

Fig. 7 A child watched bird through the telescope. His parents accompanied him.

A sharing session about the outing activity was held at once when participants got back to the hotel. Questions were asked and discussed following the worksheets distributed (Appendix 10). Here are some main points of this session:

1) Children and the elderly were the two groups which showed great interest in birdwatching. Parents who took their children with them were always willing to come and let their children to use the telescopes.

2) Finding a waterbird for demonstration is better because waterbirds are usually more stable and easy to watch.

3) Keeping this activity to be done frequently in the same place will have a greater effect (in terms of attracting new members).

4) If it is possible, a banner or exhibition board should be set up at the birdwatching point to let visitors know that this is an activity of the birdwatching societies (so that visitors will become less alert). Leaflets can also be distributed during the activity for promotion.

5) Using questions to raise visitors interest (such as asking them to find out which bird it is from the field guide) is better than telling them the answers directly.

Afternoon session

Many participants left after lunch and the rest finished an evaluation form before a conclusion was made and certificates were given.

Evaluation

The evaluation meeting was held at night in Day 3 (3 Sep). People present were Fion Cheung, Samson So, Cheung Ho Fai and Dong Jiangtian.

a. Contents

We all thought that the outing activity this time was much more successful and the rundown was smoother than last time. Participants enjoyed the games but it seemed that they were not as excited as those in the Kunming workshop. Many participants left before lunch in Day 3 (about 6 people) but it was unavoidable because they would like to go back to work the next day (Monday).

Questionnaire survey

A questionnaire was distributed to each participant. Only 16 copies were collected because participants have already left. Here is a summary of the survey results (of questions which are more important):
