TokarskiDate: June 2019JOB SUMMARYThe Pharmacy Technical Coordinator (Training Emphasis) is responsible for the development, management, and administration of the UW Health Pharmacy Technician Training Program. The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring the effective delivery of training activities including; developing, planning, organizing, scheduling, coordinating and evaluating pharmacy training of students enrolled. The incumbent will supervise training, perform quality assurance functions, develop and implement policies and procedures, and perform financial management and analysis for the UW Health Pharmacy Technician Training Program. This position requires a great deal of organizational skill due to the scope and complexity of the environment in which pharmacy services are provided. This position is responsible for the development and execution for the training of all technical services as it relates to drug products, drug distribution, professionalism, communication and career growth. Technical services may include management of outpatient and inpatient drug distribution systems, interpretation and order entry of medication and solution orders, patient billing, preparation of patient education materials, inventory management, pharmacy regulations, medication safety and quality assurance, pharmacology, and the medication use process. Additional topics such CPR/AED certification, communication and professional development are also included. The scope of patients is varied from adult to pediatrics and may include specialty areas such as transplant, cardiology, oncology, trauma, pediatrics, rehabilitation, psychiatry, Long Term Care and Homehealth. The incumbent is expected to be a role model through efficient time management, effective organization of work and prioritization. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Acute Care Pharmacy Operations.MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIESTRAINING PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT Coordination and oversight of the pharmacy technician training program content to ensure objectives and goals of the training program are being metGuide selection and use of pharmacy technician training textbooks in the development and adherence to the core training curriculum.Collaborate with clinical pharmacists, technician preceptors, program’s advisory board and the Academy to develop and continuously review core content of the training modulesServe as chair of the Pharmacy Technician Training Program Advisory Board and ensure follow through on action plansCoordinate training and scheduling of technician preceptors who will be responsible for overseeing and assessing the student training process in various pharmacy areasDevelop and maintain evaluation criteria to monitor pharmacy technician students training and progressEnsures that individualized learning plans address both behavioral and technical competency components of the technician role.Identifies barriers to creating new programs and continuing programs, and finds creative solutions that meet the needs of our customers.Identifies learner needs and provides individualized instruction.Observes and evaluates competence both in the classroom and in the pharmacies.Develop and maintain UW Health Pharmacy Technician Training Program website information through coordination with eHealthDevelop and maintain all marketing materials for technician training program through coordination with Public Affairs Communicate with surrounding communities to provide knowledge and information about the programDevelop and maintain annual fiscal budget for training program to ensure cost effectivenessTRAININGEstablish and coordinate training schedules for pharmacy technician students throughout various pharmacy areas, including partner sites.Recruit and maintain relationship with quality surrounding pharmacy sites to act as experiential training sites for studentsEnsure all qualifications and documentation is complete and up to date for each experiential site and associated pharmacy technician preceptorsConduct periodic site visits to experiential sites to ensure compliance with the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) standardsEnsure that orientation, training and competency checklists/records are complete for each technician student. Provide feedback to both pharmacy technician students and preceptors in a timely manner. Schedule retraining as necessaryProvide technician preceptor development to ensure a high level of training, communication, and customer relations with technician students, and offer methods to improve where neededGenerate, review and update training materials, and competency checklists as neededCoordinate in-services and other educational programs for internal pharmacy staffQUALITY ASSURANCE & PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENTMaintain knowledge of all components of the ASHP standards for pharmacy technician training programsApply for and maintain ASHP technician training program accreditationDevelop ongoing metrics to ensure quality of the UW Health Pharmacy Technician Training Program in accordance to the ASHP technician training standards, hospital, state and federal regulationsCollaborate with pharmacy technical coordinators to assess performance of technician preceptorsPERSONNEL MANAGEMENTReceive and review all applications that come in from potential technician studentsCoordinate and conduct on-site interviews of potential technician student candidates using behavioral interviewing techniques per established ASHP and UW Health Pharmacy Technician Training Program admission standards Provides specific admission decision to all applicants of the UW Health Pharmacy Technician Training Program. Works with human resources to onboard all accepted applicants into the training program. This includes background checks, drug test, medical assessment, and abbreviated new employee orientation. All must be successfully completed prior to the student’s official acceptance and start of the programInterview, hire, and oversee technician training program instructor(s)Schedules periodic check-in and performance evaluations with instructor(s) and technician students Preparation and delivery of periodic check-in and performance evaluations Address complex issues and/or concerns in any area of study.
