The new ACT Aboriginal Justice Centre is seeking to establish a small team of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff in their new office in the Griffin Centre. The AJC has secured 3 year funding from the ACT Government to facilitate a crime prevention initiative and will be applying to other funding sources to expand services and staff.

The Aboriginal Justice Centre will play a crucial role in reducing the incarceration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the ACT region by facilitating a combination of support, prevention, referral, case management and training programs.

The AJC Board has determined that being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent is a genuine occupational qualification to service the needs of our clients. In relation to the Case Manager positions, the AJC is aiming to recruit a balance of male and female staff so that it can fully accommodate the needs and preferences of clients and their families.

The selection process will establish an order of merit of suitable candidates and this list may be used to fill vacancies arising over the next 12 months. The Aboriginal Justice Centre is a Public Benevolent Institutional Charity and salary packaging is available to staff.

Duty Statement and Selection Criteria

Duty Statement

Under general direction,

1. Coordinate a range of administrative functions including finances, record management, reception services, human resources, client services and coordination of diaries and papers.

2. Oversee bookkeeping, petty cash arrangements and the payment of accounts for the AJC. Collect and receipt monies and prepare Business Activity Statements and other taxation information. Assist in preparing financial reports.

3. Perform administrative tasks including data collection and establish and maintain a variety of records and files using a range of software applications, including spreadsheets and databases.

4. Prepare meeting minutes and other routine correspondence as required.

5. Manage the booking of various resources in the area including IT, phones, computers and meeting rooms.

6. Manage the maintenance of the IT systems.

7. Support the coordination of meetings and events including Board Meetings, General Meetings, Annual General Meetings, community training and corporate displays.

8. Manage the Association’s membership database.

9. Manage the Association’s web page.

10. Liaise and negotiate with government and non-government agencies with regard to administrative matters and operations of the Centre.

11. Perform and manage other responsibilities as directed.

Selection Criteria – Limit of 500 words per selection criteria

1. This is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identified position. Being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent is a genuine occupational qualification for this position.

2. Demonstrated ability to manage work flow for the AJC reception and office as outlined in the duty statement. Demonstrated ability to consistently provide high quality customer service to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients and a range of internal and external stakeholders.

3. Well developed communication skills (oral and written) and the ability to liaise effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff, Board members, clients and government and non government representatives.

4. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the provision of a range of administrative support tasks relevant to a small office environment including knowledge of, or ability to learn, basic bookkeeping.

5. Demonstrated capacity to operate the office technology, including server and telephone systems. Familiarity with various computer applications including Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher and Access) and/or the ability to learn new computer applications such as MYOB, quickly.

6. Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team or independently. Be able to manage and train other staff to undertake office management and reception duties.

7. A demonstrated commitment to the implementation of the principles of workplace diversity, equal employment opportunity and occupational health and safety. Ability to uphold the values of the organisation and abide by the organisations code of conduct.

• Given the nature of the position, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a criminal history check.

Remuneration

An employment contract based upon the ACT Social and Community Services Award will be negotiated for the position. The Aboriginal Justice Centre has Public Benevolent Institutional status from the Australian Tax Office. Interview Panel

An independent interview panel will comprise a minimum of 3 independent persons appointed by the AJC Board and may include:

• The CEO of the AJC

• An AJC Inc Board Member

• A person fulfilling a similar role in another organisation

• A person representing the funding provider or their nominee
