Round 1

National Popular Voteby Chris JeubHere in Colorado, we have the “Colorado National Popular Vote” gaining much momentum in our democratic house, senate and governorship. Our state’s nine electoral votes will not go to the winner of our state. Instead, the candidate who gains the votes of the majority of Americans — as a whole — will “earn” our nine electoral votes. Does this sound like a good idea?On one hand, it must be frustrating to lose an election that most Americans voted to win. Hillary Clinton won the hearts of most Americans in 2016, yet Donald Trump sits in the Oval Office. Isn’t America a Democracy? And should democratic ideals be most valued?Well, Alexander Hamilton said of the Electoral College, “If the manner of it be not perfect, it is at least excellent.” It has given our country an incredible, nearly fool-proof voting process that has kept our “democracy” stable for centuries. And we’re not a “democracy” anyway; we are a representative republic, a gathering on individual states to voice their individual desires, not the desire of the masses. What do you think of the electoral college, or it’s current counterpart of the “National Popular Vote”? Parli debaters get to decide that this week. This week’s topics of debate include the National Popular Vote, teen suicide, California’s leadership, the definition of “navigable waters,” Obamacare, capitalism, and new presidential candidates.Parli Prep April 29, 2019Directions: The following is a “round robin” tournament with one out round.
