FBMC Bible StudyJanuary 29, 2020Church Theme: “20/20 Vision, “A Clearer Vision of who God is and the Plans He has for you.”The Gospel of John(Chapter 5)The Gospel of John is written with the purpose of proving that Jesus is the Son of God; the Messiah; the Christ. In John 3: 32-36 it says, “He speaks about what he has seen and heard, and yet no one believes him. 33?But everyone who does believe him has shown that God is truthful. 34?The Son was sent to speak God’s message, and he has been given the full power of God’s Spirit. 35?The Father loves the Son and has given him everything. 36?Everyone who has faith in the Son has eternal life. But no one who rejects him will ever share in that life, and God will be angry with them forever.” CEVToday, we are looking at Jesus as He returns to Jerusalem; the holy city. Upon His arrival, Jesus sees a man who is sick for 38 years who is lying near the pool of Bethesda. The man, along with many others who were sick, waited by the pool as many believed as angel would stir the water which brought healing to the first ones who entered in. Jesus goes to the man and asks him if he wanted to be well. Will the man take Jesus up on His offer to be healed and trust in the Lord or not? Today’s lesson will ask us how do we trust more in what we presume to bring us our help, our healing, our deliverance OR do we trust Jesus to be the source of our help? Our lesson today is asking us on our faith in Jesus and our reaction to Him speaking to us; telling us to move, stand, get up and go. John 5: 1-6 (NKJV)After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2?Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches. 3?In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water. 4?For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had. 5?Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. 6?When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?”Describe the scene John paints for us in verses 1-4 … what would be your reaction to that sight if that was you traveling in Jerusalem that day?(Compare your answer to Jesus’ reaction to seeing the same sight)Verse 4 is omitted in many translations … can you think of some things today we can compare the belief of “an angel stirring the water for healing?”Why do you think Jesus asked the man if he wanted to be well instead of instantly healing him?BONUS: Where did the “sheep gate” come from? John 5: 6-7 (NKJV). 6?When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” 7?The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.” Describe the man’s response to Jesus’ question. What limitations/reasons are the man listing to why he cannot get healed?Do you see yourself in his response? If so, explain.John 5: 8-9(a) (NKJV)8?Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” 9?And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walkedWhat did Jesus say to the man?How did the man respond?(remember, he probably has not walked in 38 years)How can we apply what the man did in our lives today?John 5: 9(b)-15 (NKJV)And that ay was the Sabbath. 10?The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.” 11?He answered them, “He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk.’ ” 12?Then they asked him, “Who is the Man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” 13?But the one who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in that place. 14?Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, “See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.” 15?The man departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. Why were the Jewish leaders upset; what did they question the man about? Why do you think Jesus left after speaking healing to the man? What do you think Jesus meant when He said, “See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.”What did the man do soon after knowing it was Jesus who healed him? ................
