Today in history

In 1965, during the Vietnam War, "The CBS Evening News" sparked controversy as it aired a report by correspondent Morley Safer showing a group of U.S. Marines torching huts in the village of Cam Ne, considered a Viet Cong stronghold, using flamethrowers and Zippo cigarette lighters.

Pet of the week

Meet Spotify, a poor little girl that has spent most of her young life in a shelter kennel.

Spotify, 6 months old, is an unknown mix, with possibly German shorthair pointer or red healer. She's spayed, microchipped and up-todate on all vaccines. In addition, she is a smart little girl, and already

knows how to "sit" and get "down" for treats. She also can walk well on a leash. She's very social with other dogs, and would be a great companion for a big dog who needs a wrestling buddy. Visit Spotify and other adoptable pets at the Humane Society of Decatur & Macon County, 2890 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday or 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Call (217) 876-0000 for more information on adopting your next family friend. Like us at MaconCountyHumane to see all of our adoptable pets and to get the latest news on adoption specials, fundraiser events and more.

Pageant numbers grow after boundaries expand

DONNETTE BECKETT

H&R Staff Writer

DECATUR ? For many years, the director of the Macon County Queen Pageant, Melissa Muirheid, has wanted to open up the residency requirement for contestants outside of Macon County.

Her wish will come true for this year's Miss Macon County Pageant.

This year the event will have 17 contestants between the ages of 16 and 23 years old vying for queen. "We usually only have six or seven," Muirheid said.

The age limit for the Macon County Junior Miss category is 11 to 15 years old. A special category for girls ages five to 10 years old allows the young ladies the opportunity to experience a real pageant.

The pageant will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, in the Decatur Civic Center.

Contestants for the Miss and Junior Miss contests are judged on their personal interviews, communication skills, stage presentation and facial beauty. Last year, Muirheid exchanged the swimsuit competition for fitness wear. "Everybody has a fitness outfit in their closet," she said.

Muirheid believes the switch also helped the pageant gain in popularity. "Besides, no one walks around in a swimsuit and heels," she said.

The contestants have been

preparing for the pageant for three weeks, meeting on a regular basis with Muirheid and a list of rules. "It's not like you just walk on stage," she said. "A lot of the girls see the commitment and leave."

After a queen has been selected, she is required to attend speaking engagements, community projects and visit organizations. "Any time someone asks us, we go," Muirheid said.

Sophia Schwalbach was crowned the 2014 Macon County Queen. Together with Muirheid, the two have been promoting the pageant the entire year through social media and one-on-one connections. Schwalbach has many duties as the reigning queen, such as any community events, parades, other county fairs and radio programs. "It's all about public speaking and it's made me grow so much," she said. "Not a day goes by that I'm not doing something as queen."
