Dr. Winifred Ross, M.Sc 1948, MD CM 1952, McGill, Art History 1992, QueensDr. Winifred Ross studied medicine at McGill University where she obtained her MDCM in 1952. She pursued a career as a radiologist at both John Hopkins and Kingston General Hospital in an era before women were welcomed into the profession.In 2008 she was quoted as saying, “Today you can practice at a level of sophistication and certainty that you just couldn’t as a young physician…you’ve got the world right in front of you now.”Upon her retirement in the late 1980s, she pursed a degree in Art History at Queen’s University.She was particularly interested in the use of technology in the field of Art. She is remembered by those who knew her as someone with a love for life and people, old and young. She possessed a passionate curiosity for science, current affairs, and the world of art.In addition to her generous endowment to the Faculty of Medicine at McGill for the establishment of the Palliative Care prize, she also initiated the Winifred Ross and Pierre du Prey Fund for Emerging Technologies in Art, Art History and Art Conservation.
