PLASTIC AND RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY HUMANITARIAN PROJECTS

Participant in International Project Wounded program. The program involved the medical / surgical care of war injured Afghan freedom fighters.Participated as chief resident in plastic surgery at Mercy Hospital Medical Center/Plastic Surgery Institute, Des Moines, Iowa, under J.O. Stallings, M.D. Surgical care encompassed treatment of facially disfigured war casualties including maxillofacial nasal, orbital, peri-oral deformities and upper extremity injuries.

Instrumental in bringing Project Wounded program to Cincinnati through Our Lady of Mercy Hospital - Anderson Township, Cincinnati, Ohio. Participated as a fellow in plastic and reconstructive surgery with the Cincinnati Plastic Surgery Associates.Director of project in Cincinnati: M.G. Leadbetter,M.D.,10496 Montgomery Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45242. Surgical care encompassed treatment of upper and lower extremity injuries of Afghan rebel fighters.

Recognition Award in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery for participation in Operation Wounded, the treatment of wounded Afghanistan freedom fighters, Washington, D.C., July, 1988,

Physician coordinator and Plastic Surgeon responsible for bringing 3 year old burn victim Maisha Atoiya from Bangladesh to West Palm Beach. The child had suffered greater than 50% body surface area burns at age one and had contractures restricting motion of upper and lower extremities. Her family was unable to get proper medical / surgical attention and her contractures were worsening. We coordinated the efforts of Palms West Hospital, through its chief executive officer, Mr. Michael Pugh, anesthesia through Dr. Joel Gomez; anesthesia department at Palms West Hospital and Pediatric care through Dr. Abellon of the pediatrics department of Palms West Hospital. We also were able to obtain tissue expanders through McGhan Medical Company. All services were coordinated to be provided gratis for this child. Over seven months during 1993 - 94, we placed tissue expanders and mobilized the expanded tissue to be incorporated in significant flap surgery which sequentially removed contracted, keloid scar tissue, to her contracted limbs. She now has complete range of motion to her upper limbs and is able to ambulate completely unrestricted. Her growth is predicted to follow a normal pattern.

MIMA FOUNDATION

Provided volunteer plastic surgical care for disfigured and burned Bolivian

children and young adults under MIMA foundation; (Medical International

Missionary Aid, based in West Palm Beach, Florida). Travel to Cochabamba Bolivia in 1996 with the medical professionals volunteering with MIMA, surgery was coordinated with Viedma Hospital and Medical School in Cochabamba. Beyond the surgical care performed, extensive clinical education concerning pre, post and intra - operative technique was given to Bolivian plastic surgeons, as part of this experience.

Range of surgeries performed included: Cleft lip and palate, secondary cleft nose deformities, treatment of extensive burns to face, body and hands; treatment of pediatric scar contractures to face, hands and upper extremities.

Palm Beach Network

Volunteer plastic surgeon for Palm Beach Care Network. This is a Florida Department of health, Palm Beach County Health Department organization of volunteer physicians. Have operated on cleft lip patients and disfigured children as part of the program. All surgical services are donated with support services also donated by affiliate hospitals recruited by Dr. Bafitis.

Dr. Bafitis has received a recognition award for his volunteer efforts by the Palm Beach Medical Society.

CON EL MISSION GROUP

Participated as the group plastic surgeon with the Con El (With Him) mission group. This is a missionary organization sponsored by the Catholic Arch Diocese which sponsors a nondenominational group of medical professionals to serve the indigent and orphan child population of Bolivia. Bolivia, being the poorest country in South America, has a definite need for state-of-the-art care.

HAROLD BAFITIS, D.O. PAGE 16 OF 18

Dr. Bafitis was involved in a medical mission during May 1998 with a medical team of 13 professionals, inclusive of two ophthalmologists and nursing support. He was a group leader and performed a gambit of reconstructive surgical procedures. The procedures ranged from neonate cleft lip, to cleft lip surgery on patients in their early 40's (no previous surgery had been done). He also performed reconstructive nasal surgery, burn surgery, hand surgery, and cancer reconstruction of the head and neck. He was involved in teaching Bolivian physicians and Bolivian nursing staff, so they can carry on a tradition of improved care to the indigent children. The medical mission was centered at Coche Hospital in Cochibaumba, Bolivia.

Dr. Bafitis has been previously involved in medical missionary work in

Cochibaumba through the MIMA (Medical International Missionary Association).

Dr. Bafitis was contacted by the AMISTAD organization. A church sponsored

mission. St. Judes Church, Tequesta, Florida with founders Father Julian Harris, Dr.

Linda Razza, and Mr. Alex Vargas. This group with the help of South Florida

Mark Foley, brought 7 year old Alicia Gabrielia Vargas from Honduras to West

Palm Beach in January of 1999.

The girl had a congenital vascular tumor which encompassed 60% of her lower lip. Not only did the tumor interfere with eating it was an evolving social and emotional concern.

Dr. Bafitis performed major surgery on Alicia at Palms West Hospital removing the tumor and successfully reconstructing the ananatomical continuity of her of her lower lip. He brought her back to the U.S. for laser resurfacing to further improve his reconstructive efforts.

All her care was donated including the services of Palms West Hospital and pediatric care, by Dr. William Jacobs of Royal Palm Beach. Dr. Bafitis headed the reconstructive team.

HAROLD BAFITIS, D.O. PAGE 18 OF18
