Official mishap data should be obtained from the Naval Safety Center. The Naval Safety Center received the following reports for July 2020Anytime we lose a sailor or marine in a preventable PMV2 crash, it is a sad day for us all. Unfortunately, in July, we saw an increase in fatal crashes to four compared to one last month but we saw a decrease to 18 PMV2 crashes compared to the previous months' 24. On a positive note our riders had a remarkable streak going from 8 – 12 July with no PMV2 mishaps reported. Reading the narratives that come in either via an OPREP or WESS initial notification makes me shake my head. The brief narratives listed in this report are almost word for word what I see in the official announcement. It some cases, you can read between the lines, and I know you are thinking - really! These types of crashes are occurring every day out there, and as you will see, the rider was not thinking! Some of these operators involved in non-fatal crashes were very lucky to have received only minor injuries, especially considering the type of crash involved. I cannot stress enough the need for situational awareness with traffic around you. The other day I picked up my Road King from having some PM done to it and decided to take a long way home vice interstate (I-64), which this time of the year was full of visitors leaving the Outer Banks of North Carolina. At every intersection or cut-thru, I made sure I was in the center lane when possible, with one lane to each side of me in case someone had that immediate urge to cross or merge in front of me. Whenever traffic was merging in from my right, I made sure I took the far left lane and did not spend any time in a blind spot. Did this mean a lot of throttle and speed adjustments on the ride – of course, it did.All I am saying riders is to adjust your space and the amount of time you share with traffic around you, and you will ride a lot longer. Let’s all stay safe out there!r/Michael BorkowskiFatal Mishaps29 July 2020/2200L - 36-year-old, E-6 Location: East Lyme CTYr./Make/Model: 0000 Suzuki GSX R1000 (Sport) PPE: YesLicense: YesTraining: Level I (Aug 2015) / Level II (Sept 2015) Remarks: Rider exited the I-95 Exit 73 ramp too fast and crashed into the guardrail.
