Course Description: A survey of the exploration, settlement, and development of Kansas with special emphasis upon early history.

COURSE AS VIEWED IN THE TOTAL CURRICULUM

History of Kansas meets the general education requirement in the humanities area. This course will transfer to all Kansas colleges and universities.

The student will profit from the course because it covers a broad array of topics that will arouse the student's curiosity and help develop a general perspective and understanding of Kansas’s history. Consequently, it will provide him/her with an appreciation of Kansas’s heritage and an understanding of the important problems of Kansas that are relative to the content of other courses in his/her program of study.

History of Kansas offers the student a survey of exploration, settlement, development, geography, and achievements and problems of Kansas.

2. Describe the indigenous cultures of Kansas and evaluate their impact.

3. Describe and analyze the significant political, social, economic, and diplomatic developments of the European American exploration and settlement of the state of Kansas.

4. Describe the impact of missionaries on indigenous and immigrant Native American populations.

5. Describe, identify, and analyze the pre-Civil War period known as “Bleeding Kansas.

6. Trace and evaluate the causes, course, and consequences of the American Civil War and Indian and Wars on the state of Kansas.

7. Describe the impact of immigrant and migrant populations in the development of agriculture and stock raising in the post-Civil War Era.

8. Describe the economic and political developments from the American Civil War and World War I.

9. Describe the impact of World War I and the flu pandemic on the state of Kansas.

10. Describe, identify, and analyze the impact of cultural and economic changes post-World War I on the state of Kansas.

11. Describe the political, cultural and economic impact of the Great Depression and World War II on the state of Kansas.

12. Describe the political and cultural of the post-World War II era on the state of Kansas.

13. Describe the political, educational, economic and cultural challenges of the Modern Era on the state of Kanas.
