Stewardship as a Way of Life

"For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many." ? Mark 10:45

If you held a mirror up to your life, would it reflect God's love and mercy? If you are struggling with this, try changing your attitude from "I want more"

to "Thank you, God, for everything you have given me, I have enough to share," This change in perspective will bring you joy through service to others. Pray daily to become less selfcentered

and to become more Godcentered.

AREA CATHOLIC COMMUNITIES

In the last two verses of Matthew chapter 28, Jesus commissions his disciples with these words: "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." In addition to removal of original sin, our Baptism gives us new life as we receive sanctifying grace. When we renew our Baptismal promises at Easter, we are reminded of our roles

as Priest, Prophet, and King.

Priest: we work towards a community that is inclusive and welcoming. We connect to others as we share our faith.

Prophet: we focus on solutions rather than blame. We reach out to others outside the physical walls of the church.

King: As disciples we are called to see the smallest needs of those among us, starting at home, moving

out to our neighbor and then to the world. As disciples we are attentive and responsive, we are a listener, we act with humility. These are the

characteristics of a servant leader.

When the first disciples waited in the upper room and prayed, they went out after receiving the gifts of the Holy Spirit. We also receive those gifts. In chapter five of the letter to the Galatians, Paul lists those gifts calling them the fruits of the Holy Spirit.

Those fruits include love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. In the study edition of the New American Bible

(the Catholic Bible), the section including the fruits of the Holy Spirit is titled "Freedom for Service".

Paul explains freedom means we use these fruits to fulfill the second part of the greatest commandment. In the words of Jesus "you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind".

Mass today (October 16/17, 2021) prepares us for the opening of a Synod. Words used to describe the term

`synodal church' are communion, participation and mission.

The readings for today include: First Reading: Acts 2: 1-11

Psalm Response: Psalm 33: 10-15 Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12: 4-11

Gospel: Luke 24: 13-35
