Science of Sainthood-St. Teresa of Avila's 9 Grades of Prayer

While all prayer essentially fits under the headings of vocal, meditative, and contemplative prayer, there's a lot more to it. St. Teresa of Avila draws much of this out in her famous Nine Grades of Prayer. Beginning in this lesson, we're going to make our way through these Nine Grades in order to understand more deeply all the different levels and nuances of what we experience as we make our way up the divine ladder. In order to be

truly and richly meritorious, spoken prayers should be offered with attention and devotion. Praying with attention means that our minds are fully awake and focused as much as possible on

the words we're saying. The more focused we are, the more meritorious our prayer. Praying with devotion means that our wills are fervently engaged in giving homage and glory to the Lord, regardless of whether or not our emotions are stirred up in the process. While we saw that Vocal Prayer is something we never leave behind even as we ascend the divine ladder,

meditation is, in many ways, the key to spiritual growth. Without it, we will never progress. As St. Alphonsus Liguori

declared, "He who prays most, receives most."

Episode 7: The New Rachel---The Old Testament story of Joseph prefigures the life of Jesus and his salvific role in the New Testament. Likewise, the life of Benjamin, Joseph's

younger brother, has parallels with the life of John the beloved disciple. Rachel, the mother of Joseph and Benjamin, prefigures Mary, the mother of Jesus and spiritual mother of John,

and, thus, she can be seen as the New Rachel.

Episode 7-Why a Church: How do I access this man who lived 2000 years ago?

How do I live this call of love? We uniquely encounter the love of God in His Church. But really? The Church? There are so many negative views of the Church.

It's out of touch. It's full of bad people. It's just too boring. Maybe when we say "The Church" we mean a little more. The

church is the family of God that's been lovingly gathered through our entire story. It's the place we were meant to encounter His grace that prepares us for every step of life. The God that is love knows how we're made ? material and spiritual ? we need tangible ways to live our faith. We can't be spiritual but not religious. This is where we'll find ultimate happiness in life. This is where the God that has been seeking

humanity, who wrote the deepest desires onto our human hearts, encounters us. Jesus' first words to humanity in the Gospel of John are "what do you seek?" The one that asked the question not only knows the answer, He is the answer. The answers to everything. And you find him most profoundly here

in His Church.

Aid or Collection for Ukraine

Several have asked if there will be a special collection for the needs of the Church and people in Ukraine. If you wish to send financial support, you might respond to the USCCB annual collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe, designating the funds are meant for the needs in the Ukraine. Also, the Catholic Extension Society and Catholic Relief Services are prepared to receive and forward gifts to Ukraine and to agencies that will assist Ukrainians who have migrated to other countries. Please continue to remember the cause of peace and a cessation of violence in Ukraine in your daily prayers. In Christ, Most Rev. Signs Of Life At The Beginning Of Lent

During the opening days of Lent, there were several events that inspired me, filling me with fresh hope for the life of the Church in southern Illinois. The first was Ash Wednesday; I was at the Cathedral of St. Peter in both the early morning and the evening. I was impressed with the number of people who came to church to be signed with the ashes and begin this holy Season of Lent. I also was encouraged by the range of ages of those present; everyone eager to begin the Lenten journey that leads to the joy of the Lord's Resurrection at Easter.

The second event that inspired me and filled me with fresh hope was the 24 Hours of Mercy offered at the Cathedral on March 4-5. Sixteen priests were available over the course of 24 hours in the Cathedral chapel for the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Penance). I estimate that close to 300 people came to the Cathedral during those 24 hours to pray before the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament and to meet the Lord in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and receive his mercy through the ministry of a priest. It was very edifying to see people of different ages coming to meet the Lord and experience Christ's mercy and compassion.

I was also glad that the 16 priests and I were offering this opportunity together; it is so important, I think, for priests to engage in ministry cooperating with our brother priests. While many of our priests may be the sole priest assigned to their parish, active collaboration and cooperation among the clergy is a way to help strengthen and build up a presbyterate. I publicly thank all the priests who assisted with the 24 Hours of Mercy; thank you for all you did to be available for the people.

Kurt Stasiak, OSB, currently serves as the Arch Abbott of St. Meinrad Archabbey in Indiana. Twenty years ago, Father Stasiak wrote a helpful guide to hearing confessions: A Confessor's Handbook. Father Stasiak writes: "Celebrating the sacrament of reconciliation can be a significant and personal experience for both penitent and priest. And for both penitent and priest, the celebration of the sacrament can be demanding. The demands made upon the penitent need no extensive commentary: humility, courage, determination, and trust are those which immediately come to mind."

And what demands are made upon the priest who acts as confessor? Stasiak notes: "In celebrating this sacrament, perhaps more than in any other exercise of their ministry, priests want to be Christ-like. They want to `put on the mind of Christ,' as Saint Paul says, and offer the compassion and understanding Christ offered. In this sacrament above all, priests want to be effective stewards of the Lord's grace. They want to be true `ambassador of peace'." In reflecting on the 24 Hours of Mercy, I am grateful to God for the faith of those who came to participate in making a confession and those priests who offered this very important ministry at all hours. God bless you all!

Finally, the third event that inspired me and filled me with hope was the Rite of Election on Sunday, March 6. Traditionally, the catechumens preparing for baptism at the Easter Vigil come to the cathedral on the First Sunday of Lent to be presented to the bishop who then elects them or chooses them to proceed to initiation as a Catholic through the sacraments of baptism, confirmation and the Eucharist at Easter. After two years of concerns over Covid, it was a welcome sight to see the faces of both children and adults who are preparing for baptism on April 16. We were also joined by dozens of baptized Christians who are seeking full communion in the Catholic faith, accompanied by their sponsors, family members and clergy. It was a joyful afternoon to see people, often with other family members, coming to faith in Jesus Christ and wanting to live as a Catholic disciple of the Lord.

What are the signs of life that are filling you with fresh hope so far in the Lenten journey? I invite you to look closely at what the Lord is doing in your life and in your days, explore what God is trying to say to you or show you. When I think about the opening days of Lent 2022, I believe the Lord was showing me that our Catholic faith continues to be vibrant and alive here in southern Illinois. I thank God for those days and the people who filled them; may the Lord continue to give reasons for hope in the coming weeks, as we hear the Lord declare to each of us once again: Follow me. In our Lord, Bishop Michael McGovern, Diocese of Belleville

SACRED SCRIPTURE CORNER

Transfiguration

"After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was

transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him." -Matthew 17:1-3

In today's Gospel, we go up to the mountain with Peter, John, and James. There we see Jesus "transfigured," speaking with Moses and Elijah about His "exodus." The Greek word "exodus" means "departure." But the word is chosen deliberately here to stir our remembrance of the Israelites' flight from Egypt.

By His death and resurrection, Jesus will lead a new Exodus--liberating not only Israel but every race and people; not from bondage to Pharaoh, but from slavery to sin and death. He will lead all mankind, not to the territory promised to Abraham in today's First Reading, but to the heavenly commonwealth that Paul describes in today's Epistle. Moses, the giver of God's law, and the great prophet Elijah, were the only Old Testament figures to hear the voice and see the glory of God atop a mountain (see Exodus 24:15?18; 1 Kings 19:8?18).

Today's scene closely resembles God's revelation to Moses, who also brought along three companions and whose face also shone brilliantly (see Exodus 24:1; 34:29). But when the divine cloud departs in today's Gospel, Moses and Elijah are gone. Only Jesus remains. He has revealed the glory of the Trinity--the voice of the Father, the glorified Son, and the Spirit in the shining cloud.

As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, "Tell the vision to no one until the Son

of Man has risen from the dead." -Matt. 17:9 Have you ever wondered why Jesus wanted the Apostles to

keep the transfiguration secret? In his commentary on the Gospel of St. Matthew in A Catholic

Commentary on Holy Scripture, Fr. A. Jones teaches us: "The glory passes and Jesus is once more the familiar friend. He enjoins silence: the vision is not to be spoken of until after

the Resurrection, presumably to avoid premature and mistaken Messianic enthusiasm. Few, knowing of the Transfiguration, would learn to appreciate the necessity of the cross."

In order for Jesus to suffer and die to redeem us from our sins, the "Messianic Secret" had to be kept in place. His Apostles were privy to His identity, although they did not understand, but His identity could not be revealed to the

public, for the sake of His Passion. Further Reading: Matthew 17:1?8, Mark 9:2?8, Luke 9:28?36

LIVING VIRTUE - How did you do on doing a nightly

examen each night last week? If you did well, then keep it up! If you didn't do so well, it's never too late to begin again.

Here are two questions to incorporate into your examen: "Where does God want me to be in terms of virtue and holi-

ness?" "Where am I right now?" Asking and honestly praying and discerning the answers to these questions help you see where to grow, and the first step to transformation is

awareness.

Did You Know...why purple is the color of

Lent? Purple is a color rich in symbolism. It is a deep, almost night-like color that focuses our attention on the fasting and repentance associated with the Lenten season. Purple is also the color of the robe placed on Jesus when He was mocked at his crucifixion. that the school building prior to the one we have now used to sit where the current parking lot is? It was built in 1900 and was two stories high, contained school rooms, living rooms for the Sisters, and halls for St. Joseph's Benevolent Society and the Local Lodge of Catholic Knights.

"We are facing an enormous and dramatic clash between good and evil, death and life, the "culture of death" and the "culture of life". We find ourselves not only "faced with" but necessarily "in the midst of" this conflict: we are all involved and we all share in it, with the inescapable

responsibility of choosing to be unconditionally prolife" (The Gospel of Life 28). "To couples who cannot have children of their own, you are no less loved by God; your love for each other is complete and fruitful when it is open to others." -Pope Saint John Paul II, February 13, 1982 Homily; goo.gl/
