Chronic kidney diseaseWhat is chronic kidney disease? Chronic kidney disease is a very common disease of cats 7+ yrs. Up to 20-50% of cats 15+ years will have some degree of kidney disease present. It basically means that over time the kidneys have worn out or become damaged and are therefore not able to function as well as they once did. The kidneys clear toxins and waste products from the body in the urine. Symptoms: Your cat will typically lose weight, drink more and their appetite may change. Diagnosis: It is much better to diagnosis the problem as early as possible because many cats do very well and go on to reach an old age! We will take a blood sample and get a urine sample. This can involve your cat being admitted for the day. If your cat has kidney problems; the renal levels in the blood will be higher and the urine will be more dilute. We may do further tests or send samples off to the lab.Treatment: The kidneys cannot regain full function but with good management we can really help look after them. Therefore, the disease needs managing for the rest of their lives. It can be managed simply by changing the diet and always making sure water is always available because these cats are very prone to getting dehydrated. We offer both wet and dry Royal Canin renal food (in a variety of different flavours and textures) and this should be fed lifelong. Some more complicated cats may need other medications too. Check ups: In general, it is good for your cat to be reviewed every 3 months but for some cats we might see them on a monthly basis for examinations, weight checks or vitamin injections. So don’t worry, we can help! ................
