Parent/Guardian VBS Information Letter:

(Please read through all of the following information carefully,

take it home with you, and keep it as a reference.)

Welcome to the Forest Center Church of the Nazarene

Vacation Bible School (VBS) 2017

Hello Parents/Guardians: Thank you for bringing your children to VBS this week. It is our privilege to have them. They are sure to have a fun time and learn a lot this week. Below is the schedule for this week along with other important information you need to know. If you haven’t already, we need you to please fill out two forms: The first form is the VBS Registration Form which we need you to complete (both sides) before you leave today. The second form is the Parental Consent Form to Publish Children’s Photographs which should be attached to the VBS Registration Form. If you have any questions let us know. Please return these forms to us as soon as you complete them. Thank you.

VBS 2017 Schedule:

Monday, June 12 through Friday, June 16, 2017:

Our VBS evening sessions are from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm each day.

Saturday, June 17, 2017:

Our VBS Picnic & Practice from noon to 2:30 pm.

This will be a picnic lunch for all the VBS participants and their families and the VBS workers. This will be followed by practice for the VBS participants for the VBS Closing Program. If you are able to bring some food to share (optional) to the picnic, there is a food sign-up sheet on the VBS information table. We will have some picnic tables set up in the church yard, but please bring some lawn chairs if you have some. Thank you.

Sunday, June 18, 2017:

VBS Closing Program Rehearsal at 9:45 am.

This will take place during our usual Sunday School time which starts at 9:45 am.

We invite and encourage you to stay for our adult Sunday School class.

The VBS Closing Program will be during the Sunday morning service at 11:00 am.

The kids who attended VBS will get to share with you and the congregation what they did and what they learned during VBS week. They will also get to perform their songs and memory verses for us. Everyone is welcome! Please feel free to invite your family and friends.

Please Note: We encourage the kids to come each day during VBS week to maximize their VBS experience, but if that’s not possible, please have them come each day they can.

This year’s VBS theme is “God of the Underdogs”

Be strong and brave. Don’t be afraid of them. Don’t be terrified because of

them. The Lord your God will go with you. He will never leave you. He’ll never desert you. (Deuteronomy 31:6, NIRV)

The God of the Underdogs VBS features five “underdogs” from the Old Testament (Joseph, Esther, David, Hannah, and Daniel) who discover that despite the challenges they face, God has not abandoned them. In addition, five other special guests (Gally Gator, Pennie Penguin, Doc Duck, Callie Cat, and Lennie Lion) will show the children that anyone who trusts in God can rise above any challenge.

These featured Bible characters and animal friends will help the children learn more about God and His love for us. This includes those who are sometimes called “underdogs.” An “underdog” is someone who may feel the whole world, or certain people, are against them. They may think they are not important, and that nothing they do makes a difference. Feeling like an “underdog” does not mean that God does not care for us or that we don’t have a part in His plan. The children will also learn that those who put their trust in God are never really “underdogs.”

Other News You Need to Know:

Arrival/Dismissal Procedures

Arrival: Please drive slowly and cautiously and park in the parking lot. Upon arrival each day, children should immediately check in with their age group leader and then be seated in the sanctuary. We would encourage you to bring your children to VBS about 5-10 minutes early each day if at all possible. That way the children will all be checked in and ready to start promptly at 6:00 p.m.

Please Note: If you did not already fill out the VBS Registration Form (both sides) on the first day of VBS or in advance of VBS this year, then please go to the VBS information table and do so ASAP. Thank you.

Dismissal: Please park in the parking lot and come in to pick up your children. Please help us look out for each child’s safety by reminding your children not to play in or be in the parking lot or the road, or near any vehicles at any time, especially at arrival and dismissal times when it’s the busiest.

Please Note: If someone other than you may be picking up your child, please make sure you write this on the VBS Registration Form under the “persons authorized to take your children from premises.” It would also be helpful to let your child’s age group leader know this when you drop off your child that day. Thank you.

VBS T-Shirts

This year there are no “specific” T-shirts for our VBS theme, but some “theme-neutral” VBS T-shirts are an option for the kids. The T-shirts on the front say “I Love (heart shape) VBS” with the church’s name underneath. The deadline for the church (Penny Larrabee) to place the order is by May 24. If you would like to order/reserve a T-shirts(s), just write the size of the T-shirt(s) needed next to each child’s name on the VBS Registration Form and then get the form to Penny Larrabee before May 24, or if that’s not possible, you can call Penny Larrabee at 715-664-8436 with the names of the children and their T-shirt sizes. The cost is $8.79 for each T-shirt and the sizes are youth XS, S, M, L, XL, and adult S through 3X. If you did not order/reserve a T-shirt for your child(ren) before the T-shirts were ordered on May 24, there may be extras that were ordered and available before or during VBS week that you can purchase on a first-come, first-serve basis. T-shirts do not need to be paid for until they are delivered or during VBS week and can be paid with cash or a check payable to Penny Larrabee.

Music

A CD of our VBS songs are typically given to each family (household) for the children to keep so they can listen to and enjoy these fun and inspirational songs when at home and in the car. Feel free to sing along with your kids!

Games

Sturdy and safe shoes are recommended every day so your children can freely run and play without twisting an ankle or stubbing a toe.

Dirt Alert

Our crafts and games are awesome, fun, and some may be potentially messy! So please make sure your children wear comfortable play clothes that you do not mind getting dirty.

VBS Donations

There will be a labeled, zippered blue bank bag on the VBS information table each day during VBS week in which you can donate money to the church towards the expenses of our VBS. Donations are optional, so please do not feel obligated to give money. However, we do thank you very much for any donation you may give.

Mission Moment

The children and the VBS workers will have the opportunity to give money in the daily free-will missions offering which will go towards the 2017 Kids Reaching Kids Mission Offering Project which is titled “For Our King.” This offering will be raising money to help immigrant or refugee children in every world region who have had to flee their homes because of war, violence, persecution, or disaster. The theme verse for this offering is Matthew 25:40 (NIRV): The King will reply…Anything you did for one of the least important of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.

Take-Home Bags

At the end of each evening VBS session, each child will be given a Ziploc bag labeled with their name to take home with them. Their daily Bible lesson/activity papers, Bible memory verses, daily give-away items, music CD, crafts, prizes, any notes to the parents, etc. will be put in their Ziploc take-home bag. Please make sure your child has their take-home bag when you pick them up each evening. Each day at home, please take the contents out of your child’s Ziploc bag and go through the items with them. Please send the empty Ziploc bag with your child when they come back to VBS each evening. If you or your children have any money for the daily free-will missions offering or any other items they should return to VBS, please have your children put them in their Ziploc bag. Your children can keep their bag after VBS on Friday (the last evening session of VBS).

Please Note: If your child’s name tag and/or name tag holder is accidentally put in their take-home bag, then please have them bring it back to VBS in their bag. At the end of VBS on Friday, the kids can keep their name tags if they want, but the church keeps and reuses the name tag holders.

Daily Points and Prizes

All the children who attend our VBS have several ways they can earn daily points and some awesome prizes too! First of all, the children can pick a daily prize out of the prize box each day they attend VBS IF they have behaved well and participated well for that day. Second of all, grand prizes will be awarded on Day 5 (Friday) of VBS TO the TOP 12 children who earn the most points during VBS week. Children who earn a grand prize should be present on Friday in order to receive it; if this is not possible, the grand prize could be given to someone the child knows who is present AND who can give it to them. The children can earn points in the following ways:

1. Kids get one point for each day they attend VBS.

2. Kids get one point for each new visitor they invite or bring to VBS.

3. Kids get one point each day for good behavior.

4. Kids get one point each day for good participation.

5. Kids get one point each day if they recite the daily Bible memory verse.

6. Kids get one point for each extra Bible memory verse they recite.

Please Note: A sheet listing the daily Bible memory verses and the extra Bible memory verses will be

sent home in the children’s take-home bags in case they want to work on memorizing any of the

verses at home (or if they did not already recite them at VBS for any particular day).

7. Kids get one point for each gospel tract they read (or have read to them if they can’t read yet) and

another point if they read or share the gospel tract with someone outside of VBS. Any gospel tracts

that may be given will be sent home with the kids in their take-home bag.

8. And other opportunities to earn more points might arise throughout the week.

You are Always Welcome

We hope you and your children will continue to come back to our church after VBS to worship and fellowship with us and to grow in your relationship with Jesus Christ. If you do not already have a home church, we can be your home church. We would love to have you! Please feel free to take the opportunity at any time to attend and participate in our Sunday School (for children, teens, AND adults), our Sunday Morning Worship Services, Bible Study and Prayer Meetings, Men’s Fellowship, Women’s Fellowship, Christian Movie Nights, various ministry opportunities, and any of the other activities and events we have throughout the year. If there is ever anything we are able to help you with or if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to let us know.

Thank you,

Your VBS Team
